Comment:
Vineberg allows no room for opinions unless they mirror his own. If you don't write like him, you are never going to see B averages on your papers. Although I got a good grade, the amount of stress I went through to get there was not worth it. Would NOT recommend this professor. The class would have been great if Vineberg wasn't a part of it.

To anyone who is looking for a class to explore the theatre department: DO NOT AND I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. The amount of stress you will have is not worth the small amount of content you will learn in the course. Also, while I earned a B in the course, I do agree that he's an extremely unreasonable grader. If you can avoid him do so!

Professor Vineburg grades harshly but honestly, his feedback taught me how to write. If you did bad on his first paper, he really works with you to improve your grade. He is always accessible outside of class and is even willing to review your drafts. However, he does assign a LOT of films to watch. He assigned us 3 films/week 40 films/semester

He essentially wants you to regurgitate his POV in your essays, but you have to turn them in before the lecture on the movie. I genuinely think that he wanted me to succeed when I went to office hours, but his comments on my papers were so harsh. He screamed at our class twice. I think that probably a third to half of the class dropped this class.

Prof. Vineberg is an extremely smart man, but is a very challenging professor. He won't teach you how to analyse films - the approach of which is very different to literary papers - before he assigns one. He will then proceed to tear your essay to shreds. His lectures are interesting to listen to, but can be scrambled. The final is hard.

His lectures are interesting and great however little guidance is given to write papers. He makes you feel dumb when you go to office hours for help and if you dont agree with his opinions you will fail. He is not open to other interpretations.

It's no secret that Steve is a tough grader but he will make you a better writer even if you're used to getting A's or if you're struggling to pull a B-. He's passionate about film and theater and that will rub off on you.

One of the worst professors you can take at Holy Cross. He doesn't actually teach you how to analyze a film before you write a paper, so don't be surprised if you get a B- or lower. It's his opinion or no opinion and all the people who say he's helpful in office hours must never have actually gone because he offers no guidance. He's just critical.

Steve Vineberg is by far the most engaging professor I have ever had the pleasure of having. His lectures are a gift to mankind. It is very clear he takes great care of his mustache and his outfits are always on point. Overall, 9.5/10. Would recommend to my friends and my enemies. His lectures are only surpassed by his natural talent for acting.

Steve Vineberg is a god amongst men. He will hate everything you write for him, but you will always try your hardest to make him proud. Get ready for some intense films like Shawshank Redemption and The Dark Knight, two of his favorite films.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is harsh and mean. He thinks he's being funny, but hes not. He will attack your papers and make you feel stupid. Because he makes you feel stupid, it is hard to see what he actually wants in his papers, and then when you do do what you think he wants in his papers, he says your wrong. Smart guy, terrible grader.

Steve is the most difficult, frustrating professor I have ever had. He rips you bare on papers, is condescending in rehearsal, but I am madly in love. He challenges you in the most wonderful way, and genuinely cares about his students. But you HAVE to: watch the movies, read the texts, see him before writing papers! (and go to writers workshop)

Incredibly hard grader on papers, criticizes in a very condescending way. However, he does care about your improvement. Paper topics can also be very difficult, especially if you're not experienced in writing film papers. If you enjoy dissecting films bare he's your guy.

Course: world film. 1- if Steve says it's a bad movie, it's a bad movie. 2-very mentally sharp and insightful, not afraid to call a student out tho. Grading tendencies- tough, but thorough and helpful. I improved more in one paper with Steve than a whole semester with Cordon in CRAW poetry. If you get a good grade, you've done well, my friend.

Vineberg is the foremost authority on film and movies. He demands a lot, especially in papers. But no other teacher improved my writing like he did, before or since. He challenges you to grow and helps you along the way. I'm a much better thinker and writer because of him. You will come out of his class knowing theatre and movies like your hand!

Prof. Vineberg is one of the foremost theatre and movie authorities. He demands a lot, especially from papers. But no other teacher has helped me improve my writing more than he--not one. He pushes you to get better and helps you along the way. He genuinely cares about his students and loves teaching undergraduates.

His film class is lecture-based. There is no text book. Sometimes listening to his lectures can get a bit overwhelming. He seems like a film reviewer who ended up teaching, but he really wants to be a reviewer for The New Yorker. Plays favorites. But a professor who expects your best, especially when it comes to writing. You'll learn how to learn.
