Steve is ne of the coolest geology professors at ASU. GLG 301 was graded on outlines (essentially participation points), a final project, and online quizzes which weren't due until the end of the semester. Lectures are genuinely interesting and Steve is a great presenter! You also get to go to the Grand Canyon! Take this class!

One of the best professors I have had. He is really passionate about science and geology. He makes the class so interesting. Class points are given everyday so you must attend class. No final exam but you have a end of the year project. Weekly chores that are quizzes that you do online. Extra credit is offered. He cares about his students.

He is so passionate and caring. His lectures are amazing. You must go to class to get the daily attendance points. Online quizzes that you should study for, but aren't too difficult. Gives an awesome extra credit Grand Canyon field trip. Overall, wonderful class. Take him if you want to learn geology of the southwest!

Semken is an amazing professor that clearly enjoys what he does. His lectures are concise, he's always willing to talk to students after class, and his tests are based off of the chores (quizzes). On top of that, he drops the lowest test and offers an extra credit trip that's fun! The only way that you will fail is if you don't try.

Comment:
Dr. Semken lectures are not boring. However, he uses a high vocabulary level, which means he tries to change the words of the question by using a difficult synonym of it. So, it is really hard for us as international students. You may know the information, but you could not understand the question, so you will a low grade. Overall, it is not easy.

Great, knowledgeable professor who is very passionate about his subject. Lectures are very engaging, and he brings rock samples that you can look closely at after class and he always stays around for questions. His passion makes you want to learn. Go on the extra-credit grand canyon field trip, his tour I would pay money for. Would take again.

The weekly assignments are easy if you take the time to read the chapter. You also get two tries at them. Don't let him downplay the tests! They are all multiple choice, but challenging because a good portion of the tests don't come from the weekly assignments, so you need to study. DO ANY EXTRA CREDIT! This made the difference between a B+ and A!

Comment:
The lectures are entertaining and Semken is very passionate about the subject. Attendance is done by a 1 question quiz everyday. There is one "chore" homework per week, which are very similar to the questions on the tests. Tests are multiple choice and based off of homework, but answers are very similar so you must KNOW the topic.

Great guy. You can tell he really loves geology. For all his tests he puts the hw assignment in the test. Still they aren't easy tests at all. Actually, most people say they think they did well and got a C or worse. So, you don't have a clue what grade you got until you get your test back.I don't like it.

SEMKEN IS AWSOME! I just loved this little guy he is so funny. The class for me was more on the difficult side but don't get discouraged by the first test. Read the book and for the tests make sure you know the chores because a lot of the test questions are taken from the chores. I would recommened this class thought for sure

You will not find another teacher at ASU who lectures with more clarity than Dr. Semken. His lectures are very engaging, I would recommend him to anyone interested in the subject. His tests are challenging, but if you go to class, study your notes, and read the book you will be fine.

Awsome teacher. He is a really smart guy. It is so easy to get an A in this class. He gives you 100+ points for going on field trips. He hands you the answers in his chores and the essential ideas. There is almost no need to go to class except for the occasional extra credit.

Easy class; Lots of extra credit (field trips as well); drops a test; 3/4 of the test material comes from multiple choice homework questions. Make sure you do the homework (you can retry it until you get them all right) then memorize those for the tests and you will have an easy A. He was enthusiastic and did a good job overall.

This class is HARD. I'm not going to lie. I don't think I've gotten above a C on any of his tests. He offers TONS of extra credit though, so take advantage of it because you're going to need it!! He's a good professor and he's got a great sense of humor.

This guy is great, and he is so enthusiastic that it's hilarious. He gives a ton of extra credit in the form of field trips, and the final is optional if you have a good grade at the end of the semester. I love Steve Semken

This was not a blow off class...don't bother buying the textbook just read the slides online and study the chores for the tests because that is 75 percent of the test. He does not seem very patient with people not understanding.
