I really enjoyed his class. He will never make a response sound ignorant. Likes to invoke conversation and opinion.

Dr. Carmichael is an amazing professor. Lectures are interesting and makes you want to learn. Weekly quizzes on the readings, but very general questions so you can just skim them. 5 papers, but one of them is a group paper and one is the final. I would recommend his class to anyone.

Really knows his stuff and is hilarious! Quizzes every Friday and group projects. You have 3 papers assigned and are pretty easy but he is super vague. ALWAYS HAVE A THESIS!!! He is so serious about having a thesis or you will fail. Midterm was easy but once again he was vague on what it was about. Final is a take-home essay as well.

Pretty good professor, quizzes on readings every Friday, will extend dates if needed, takes attendance but you don't really have to go, take home final exam, gets into his lectures

I LOVED this class. He starts off the class very strict, but after a few weeks, he becomes really relaxed. He'll cancel quizzes & push back deadlines. There are "weekly" quizzes (we maybe had 5), a super easy midterm, 3 papers, & a final paper. He practically gave us an outline for our final paper. His class is so interesting, take him if you can!

Don't take his class if you have a busy schedule and are not willing to put in the time. Definitely equivalent to a "Major" level course with regard to hours put into tests/assignments/projects. Amazing lectures!! I just wish it wasn't a gen-ed. It really took time away from other priorities.

Funny, interesting guy and the class is quite fascinating. Weekly quizzes on the reading, 2 group projects (paper and "drug tracking"), like 3 short papers and only 2 tests: midterm and final.

the first few weeks are tough, but he get's really relaxed with the class. don't drop because it turns into a really entertaining (& easy) class! everyone failed the first paper, but he allows you to redo it! go to his office hours, he LOVES to help out his students. the quizzes & tests (only 2) are super easy! I highly recommend it!

He's a very tough grader, especially on papers where he always tell you you don't have a thesis but you clearly do. He has a quiz every Friday so don't plan to take off any vacation days. And all his quizzes have nothing to do with the lectures. Very few assignments so you have no chance to catch up. He's never clear on what he wants. Do not take.

He is very unreasonable as a professor. I received an F on the first paper, so I decided to visit his office hours to talk about it. He discussed with me what I had done wrong and told me how to fix it. I followed his instructions and redid the paper only to receive another F. He expects too much for a general education class.

He will work with you. Sit in the front, participate, show him that you care and you'll be rewarded. Effort is key. If you can't do all the readings, at least skim them!! No one does them and he asks VERY general questions, it's a great way to separate yourself in the quizzes. Dr. Carmichael is the man.

Horrible teacher, extremely rude,& just terrible experience. No assignments really, and on the few he does assign he gives terrible feedback and never really tells you what he wants. He told me I didn't have a thesis so many times and I am an english major... I know what a thesis is and is not. He also was very rude to me anytime I had a question.

He sucks, plain and simple. I took this class as a major requirement because of my African concentration and if I would have taken this class earlier in my college career, I definitely would not have a concentration in Africa. He thinks he's hilarious and he's not even remotely funny. His assignments are not clear at all and he sucks at grading.

He is an extremely hard grader. He gives two paper assignments and both papers he gave everyone in the class a C because he felt they were so bad they deserved less but he isn't "that mean of a teacher." Yet, when asked for feedback on what you did wrong he almost refuses to give you any. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.

He is definitely passionate about teaching. He tries to make the class interesting and exciting. There aren't many grades but there are only two papers, a presentation, and attendance to worry about; just show up and take notes. He is not a tough grader at all. This was one of my favorite classes this semester. I would definitely take him again.

Carmichael is a great guy, bad teacher. There are practically no assignments, which sounds great, but the midterm and final are a huge portion of the grade and he is so unclear about the assignments its tough to even know what you are supposed to be doing! I would not take him again

Great professor, answers all questions and emails! Pretty mush just show up and take notes. There is a midterm and a final paper but they are broad questions and it is an easy A.

Great teacher, very interesting and engaging in class. If you show up and take notes you should be fine I never did any of the readings and had no problems. The mid-term was the only in-class written test plus a few essays (the final is a short paper). Mostly he's just interesting, especially since he talks about drugs in history for one theme.

Dudes a genius, def take any of his courses! No ppts/no rigid structure/class a bit erratic. Class disc. is absurdly off the wall but he somehow links it all back. Def do readings/participate. Youll leave each class feeling 10x smarter & satisfyingly confused. Understanding & easy 2 work with unlike other profs @ cofc. An excellent history teacher!
