Comment:

Carbrey was one of my favorite professors at JMU. You really decide for yourself the amount of effort you are going to put in to your work, but she does encourage you to push yourself and grow as an artist. I learned a lot in this class and I encourage you to talk to her one-on-one as much as you can because she really is an amazing woman.

Comment:

Carbrey is one of the best teachers I have had at JMU. I took both her 102 and 104 classes. She really cares for her students and pushes them to be experimental and to find their style. She gives all of her students helpful feedback as well! Take her! Just go to class, try to work your best and you'll get an A.

Comment:

Awesome balance of challenge and fun. She's super willing to bend requirements if you have a creative idea. She gives a 15 minute break every class, which is nice. Most classes are workshop classes so you can listen to music and just draw. Didn't work on contour line at all and only ever used charcoal (except for one painting project) though.

Agnes was hands down my favorite professor this semester. She definitely has her favorites, but thats based off how much effort you put into class. Shes extremely specific in what she wants from your artwork & will give you such helpful feedback. She 100% made me a better artist & pushed my limits. If you slack off shell know. Dont miss class.

Carbrey is wonderful and pushes you to do your best. She has a dry sense of humor that can seem cold, but if you put in the effort in drawing, talking in critiques, and owning what you do she'll love you. Provides advice that's subjective but it helps develop your thought and creative process as an artist. Definitely take her if you can!

I loved carbery and even signed up for her art 108. She is very hard and will make you work for your grade but its worth it. She gives such good critiques and will really make you a better artist. Doesnt have a canvas page which can be confusing but shes a great professor

Carbrey is one of my favorite professors ever. I found her teaching methods to be the best for my creativity and I was surprised by how much I learned. She is really an awesome lady and she is there to answer any of your questions. If you put in dedication and effort she will really connect with you and help you one on one.

Mrs Carbrey is one of my favorite professors and I plan to take her as many times as I can. After taking her class I already felt like I improved tremendously at drawing. If you put forth the effort and do the work she assigns, you will do just fine. Oh, and she also tells some truly amazing, funny stories in class.

Professor Carbrey is one of the coolest people you will ever meet. She comes off a bit harsh at first, but she is seriously such a sweet woman. She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. TALK during critiques- participation matters.

Agnes, an interesting and great professor. You have to take the time to talk to her and get some 1 on 1 time and you'll be good to go. She is honest and will help you get the grade you want. One time she made me start over an assignment but that only helped me do better and become a better artist. She is a solid character, would take her again.

I started off the semester a little reluctant of Carbrey, but as we got further and further into the class she grew on me. She can be tough, but only if she knows you can push your work further. I would highly recommend this class.

I'm not great at drawing and & I felt like the worst artist in the world in her class. I could never give her what she wanted(not for lack of trying)because I'm just not as talented. I dreaded going to class every M/W. If you're not an art major or not great at drawing, DON'T TAKE HER. If you're both of those things, then go for it. She'll love you

Carbrey is the bomb. One of the best professors I've had at jmu. She is very helpful and gives great feedback. As long as you put forth the effort and show her you're trying, you'll do fine. I was terrible at drawing, like stick figure terrible, but I still got an A because I worked hard. I learned so much from her. I can actually draw now.

Carbrey can be very tough on you and really pushes you to do your best. Sometimes you'll hate her and other times you'll love her. She's open to free expression of ideas and is a very fair grader. If you apply yourself and seem interested you can get an A and you will learn a lot.

Prof. Carbrey either loves or hates you, to be honest. I was fortunate enough to be on her good side, so she was very helpful and understanding to any issues you had. Homework almost every week and an outside of class final that took about 30 hours of work. It was a lot of outside work throughout the semester, but not insanely difficult.

Wants things her way, if things aren't her way or style, she doesn't like it. Wasn't very helpful, confusing at times, lots of assignments. Cares more about your ideas and effort than skill or craftsmanship. You'll learn a lot and develop skill. You either love or hate her, i hated her. Can be rude, harsh, and close-minded.

She is hands down on of my favorite professors. She's tough when it comes to grading but she is very understanding that not all people draw primarily. If you hear people complain about that, they probably shouldn't be in Art anyways. She seems mean at first, but she just does that to weed the slackers out. She genuinely cares about all of us.

for 2D design, it got easier halfway through due to complaints on the out-of-class work (all class time was initially used for critiques). it was really expensive (on top of the supply list) and it required lots of trips to Walmart and downtown. it is REALLY important you get on her good side by trying hard - you'll know if she likes you or not.
