Comment:
Kalter is a good professor you just have to be ready for the way he teaches. He speaks English in class and every two weeks you have a meeting where you speak Spanish with him, and he really knows his stuff. His syllabus is confusing so I recommend just looking at it and re-writing it out yourself.

His class made me care about actually learning spanish for the first time in my academic career. He is one of those teachers that invests his time in his students, making sure that they learn the language. Be prepared to work for your grade; stay organized, but it will pay off. Kalter is one of the best spanish teachers I have been taught by.

His class is very overwhelming at first because you don't really know what is expected. He is a little eccentric but when I had questions I would ask him after class and he always helped. To do well in his class you have to communicate and not be disrespectful, but as long as you participate and try good grades are attainable.

Has like 8 different Syllabus'. Office hours are terrible and he doesn't like to help. Applies ridiculous pressure during Oral Finals. has 0 sympathy. Hard to understand w/Spain accent. WORST teacher at OSU, no lie. Makes you feel dumb if you get anything wrong. Old, bitter man.

This is the worst teacher I have ever had! I love learning Spanish and he made me hate it. I went in for his office hours one time and asked him to clear up a few things on his sylabus and he looked me straight in the eye and said if you can't figure it out on your own you shouldn't be in my class. and to my defence he handed out 8 different papers

He is one of the worst professors I have ever had. WILL NOT answer questions and makes you feel stupid in class if you can't pronouce something exactly correct. The work isn't clear, my friends and I had no idea what we were really supposed to do!

He definitely knows spanish, but he doesn't know how to teach. And it's hard to take someone who thinks they are better than a native speaker seriously. He's a funny guy when it comes to anything other than Spanish, but don't expect him to baby you if you don't understand something.

Alan Kalters class was poorly put together. He gave the students very little useful information and many of the assignments were given with no direction

First thing, he DOES NOT teach in Spanish. Really. Second he will make fun of you for making mistakes. I did not learn anything from him, in fact I speak Spanish with less proficiency after his class. I loved spanish, this term I dreaded every single day. If you want a good Spanish prof, look elsewhere!

I love this teacher!! At first he seems intimidating but if you actually put the work in, you will get a lot out of the class. If you can't handle the criticism you need in order to learn a second language, don't take spanish from him. But if you want to learn it right, I recommend!!

Best spanish teacher ive ever had. He's very knowledgable about the language. His organization of assignments was a bit confusing but once i understood it, everything was great. He loves teaching and really cares about his students more than any professor I've ever had. I would take him over any other professor.

Horrible! Will laugh and tell you you're wrong but won't tell you what exactly is wrong or how to fix it. Threatened to fail a girl because she wouldn't use HIS accent. Tells kids not to ask him for help on the homework because he doesn't understand it...his homework! Uses encouragements like "3 million hispanics will laugh at you!". Avoid.

Take the sequence from him if you are highly confident in your ability to speak, write, and read Spanish. He will not directly answer questions. He will contradict other instructors and textbooks. He will not encourage the practice of the language during class time. More than anything else, he is a confusing "babysitter."

Ok, heres how simple it is. IF you really love spanish and are taking it to further yourself, by all means take it from him. He is the best, no joke. He knows his crap. Now, more than likely you're just trying to knock out a couple years of language for you major, and in that case, DO NOT take it from him. He is good, but hard.

I think he just makes up his curriculum as he goes. His expectations are really broad and his syllabus doesn't have any hw assignments. He doesn't speak any spanish, except for clarifying that what he said was the truth at the end of every other sentence by saying "verdad". DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS, verdad?

****BAG! This guy is a terrible professor. You would think that a Spanish class would be taught in Spanish...but no. This guy hardly speaks to you in Spanish, always English. When he speaks he looks over the top of your head like he has some weird complex. Do whatever you can to NOT TAKE classes from him. In fact, I recommend he leave academia!

A total jerk. It was either his way or the highway. I am Mexican, with knowledge of street Spanish, and he told me that everything I know is wrong, including things my father told me (who is fluent in Spanish)! Worst teacher ever. If it's not from Spain, it's not Spanish in his eyes. He's horrible. Don't EVER take him because he is a waste of life.
