Comment:

Professor definitely knows his stuff, but that's about where my props for him end. He goes off on completely superfluous tangents and good GOD is he boring. I mean really, I had to fight to stay awake. So unless you wanna crack yourself up on a triple shot of espresso to stay awake in his classes, I suggest you look elsewhere for a professor.

This class has one midterm, a paper, and a final. Everyone failed the first midterm so he had to change the whole grade weighting system just so we could pass the test. Very rough class. Horrible handwriting. Hardly writes notes. Base lecture info off of what he verbally says. Hostile.

Love this teacher! His lectures are great. Made a topic I have no interest in interesting. I had a block period (3 hour class) and was able to stay attentive though most of it. He wants his students to pass. Grade relies on two tests and a paper. Read the book!

Horrible teacher. Clearly despises the CSU system and b/c of that makes it clear he won't be fully teaching you b/c it's "not in his contract." Rambles at you for 2-3 hours while writing illegibly on the board. Does not synthesize reading material to lectures. Completely vague. If you want to hate your semester, he's the guy for you.

First year student. Horrible handwriting cannot read, I fall asleep during every lecture. He does not use moodle, so i do not know if i am failing or passing. 10 page paper at the end of the year, i have no clue what to write, I could not understand his lectures... most likely going to fail... please do not take this class!

I serioulsy believe he is senile! Poli Sci is my major I love it. I can not understand or read a single word this guy says or writes. He tells you to do one thing on your research paper and then the next day sends you an email completely contradicting what he already said and expects you to know. He will not re emails Do not take this class!

This prof. truly is "pink right down to his underwear." He argues that MAO's "Great Leap Forward" marked a great stride in human history. Last time I checked 70-million+ people died at the hands of MAO's disasterous policies! Merrifield has NO chance of ever surviving in the real world, but academia readily continues to shelter this coward...

I agree with those displaying outrage over this professor, he is a complete discrace to the higher education system and should be fired immediately.. Guess what tax payers of California? This professor took a 4 month sabatical to go Wine Tasting with his wife! Furthermore he is on sabatical yet again to argue with the state about his pay - discrace

Completely ruined my interest in politics. How can you leave your political beliefs at the door when he is be-littling your entire belief system to your face? And you can't dare respond or he will grade you down if it contests his Communist-Pinko Agenda. Guy is a complete TOOL! I agree with the person 2 coments ago, ABOLISH TENURE ASAP!!

Merrifield is one of those professors who rewards you with the knowledge received in his class but brutally punishes the student with poor grades at the same time. Lectures are funny, and this guy totally knows his stuff. He's willing to work with a student if they visit during office hours, and is actually not (as) bitter outside of class.

He's amazingly intelligent and his lectures are a lot of fun... you will never be bored, and you will be encouraged to become engaged. He can be pretty intimidating, though... he's not for any one who is sensitive at all. Great professor, I disagree with almost all of his views but still repect him a lot; I would take another class from him gladly.

Merrifield is a tired, prattling old Soviet whose philosophy and politics are relentlessly out-of-date. That said, his knowledge and intellection are unassailable, his sense of humor is merciless, and his lectures - for the most part - rewarding. He is not for the weak of spirit, though.

He definitely can be intimidating. Takes some getting used to but he definitely knows his stuff. Takes some getting used to his cynicism but you will learn a lot..if you listen to him and follow his recommendations of papers/projects. Once you get to know his style he will become a favorite.

Lots of great stories to tell, is very cynical and humorous about government. It's very easy to figure out what the essay question on the test will be... just prepare for it and you will be fine.
