Brian is a fair professor, and a good human. His intelligence can be intimidating, but he will level with you. He is approachable, and really cares about what he does.

Brian is super funny, completely dedicated to math, and totally willing to help with any homework problems. The year long program is really hard and definitely upper division. If you haven't taken calculus don't take this program, I promise you won't do well, no matter what you think. If you've had calculus though, and are willing to work, do it!

This is about Brian's 1 year math program: RA, set theory w/ proof, AA/Galois, comb. & prob, and seminar. He lectures fine. His love of math is evident. We used Inquiry-Based Learning for RA, so we really dug in instead of memorizing. He is really funny and witty and pleasant; the year is ~insane. Maybe it could be easier. But you feel proud!

Though the class I took this quarter was supposedly Brian's brainchild, he seemed totally uninterested in teaching. Spotty attendance and very weak presence when he did show. He really did not seem to care about the class at all. He also seemed to not want to answer anyone's questions.

Comment:
Brian is inconsiderate when it comes to students' needs. He gave me credit in "Liberal Arts Math", a class that many grad schools do not recognize. I later took Discrete Math, which he could have justified giving us credit in without even changing the curriculum. This would have been useful to people looking at programs in both math and teaching.

great guy. really smart and entertaining to listen to. should not be allowed to teach classes with steve hendricks--workload is horrible and they just goof off with each other during class rather than being helpful to students. also does not get work back in a timely manner and can be overly moody at times.

Brian Walter is one of the best teachers I have ever had. A combination of his vast knowledge of mathematics/computer science combined with his sharp wit make for extremely interesting lectures. Don't expect his classes to be easy. He expects you to figure things out for yourself rather than just walking you through them. I highly recommend him.

He is very straight about what he wants, honest; at the same time he's funny, caring, and interested in helping you if you're up for a real challenge; be ready for rubbing your cheek into the grinder. In retrospect I can't wait to take a class with him again. He'll teach you something, and you won't get by without learning it. Be warned and ready.

Brian is hilarious, brilliant, and creative. He can approach mathematics from a number of illuminating perspectives. Whether he's working with numbers, processes, or the abstract concepts at the heart of his field, it will be a tasty and digestable treat. Also, he is more than willing to provide extra-cirricular assistance to those in need.

Mr. Walter is a very intelligent instructor. His assignments are challenging; and his exams have weird word problems. But, overall, if you complete the work you will definitely learn something. I think he needs a raise though, since he often wore the same pair of pants two, or even three, days in a row.

Very smart. He has the ability to take an arbitrary question and answer it with a (seemingly) prepared lecture that gracefully brings you the the answer, the reason why it's the answer, a proof and any relevant history.
