Comment:
Grade is from a class I previously took with her. Im infuriated by her teaching style. Her lectures are straight from the book but her powerpoints are poorly organized and hard to comprehend. Lab is a mess, have to memorize over a hundred species and be able to differentiate skulls in practicals with a time limit. Very bad.

In my opinion I liked her as a professor. Yeah, her PowerPoints are incredibly boring, but as long as you go to her class you should get an A. Some of the questions on her exams are not worded well, but I have done very well on her exams. Labs are really easy and dull. You don't have to read the book, but it would be nice to have just in case.

Dr. Monk is a really good professor. Yes, she is tough, and yes you have to memorize a lot of material; but what do expect from a class that makes you an actual mammalogist in WA state. If you attend all of your lectures and labs, & keep up on making note cards for your material you will do fine. Powerpoint's are good, paces is good, & she's honest.

Comment:
In this course you are expected to memorize 120+ species of mammals by skin and/or skull. Youre also expected to know the Latin names and be able to spell them correctly. All over the span of 3 lab practicals that cover not only different families and genera, but different orders of species as well. Its ludicrous. I do not recommend Dr. Monk.

Dr. Monk is a great professor. She expects you to come to class and doesn't put notes online, however if you go to class when you're supposed to you won't have a problem passing. Her lab is difficult, but if you take the time in lab and ask good questions, you again won't have a problem passing the class. She has been my favorite professor at WSU.

Extremely unhelpful, will tell you that you aren't trying hard enough, spends too much time talking about birds for a mammal class, oftentimes doesn't know answers to questions, asks trick questions on exams, have to memorize a ridiculous amount of information for lab practicals, only way to pass is if you have a really good memory

If you are interested in animal behavior know that this class is more about the evolution of behavior. Monk talks softly & monotone, and her Powerpoints are messy. Material comes straight from the book. I don't recommend her if you have a choice. Not fun. Everything taught is common knowledge. I got an A with hardly any studying all semester.

Passing her tests requires attending class and carefully reviewing the study guide, but they are not impossible, I have passed them all with only a few hours of studying. She has a lot of typos in her tests and handouts which can by confusing. This is definitely an intro level bio class, you need no prior knowledge to take it. Just go to class.

She teaches fairly well. She speaks pretty quietly so you need to sit somewhere near the front. I have yet to get above a 50% on the tests but her specimen assignments are really easy and are not hard to get 100% on. Attending class is a must and taking notes are a must. I wouldn't suggest this class to anyone not in a animal science major.

Very hard tests, very easy assignments. Don't take this class unless your major deals with animals. Took in Fall 08, 95% on assignments, 70% on tests. Studied a lot for tests, and went to class every day.

Her class is pretty interesting and her assignments are very doable, but her tests are really hard. Most of the class had a D average on tests, but I earned a solid B in the class. Took class F'08.

Only an idiot could get less than a B in this class. Tests = easy. Assignments = too easy. GO TO CLASS.

Horrible teacher, annoying boring voice, tests are extremely hard and all so far have been a D average. Assignments are easy, might be one of the worst teachers i've ever had.

The class itself I find very interesting, but she speaks quickly and includes things on tests that were in lecture, but not PowerPoint. The homework is really easy, but the tests are ridiculously hard. Each one had a D class average...so good luck. Again, cool class, nice lady, impossible tests.

this lady is a bird enthusiast - to the nth degree. i had no idea of her bad reputation with the 102 classes, but the only beef i had with her is that her lecture material did not prepare one for the exams... i thought the ornithology lectures were fun.
