Comment:

Although I was not a fan of the period covered, I think Prof. Macchi did an excellent job at selecting readings that shed light on the thoughts of the thinkers of that time. I respect her as an academic although she can be a little intimidating. Maybe the Spanish was tough, but you are expected to have a B2 level after the two Spanish classes, so..

Comment:

Fernanda seems like a nice lady but she is NOT the right pick for a 200-level class that is supposed to be accessible for non-native Spanish students. The readings were extremely difficult, often written in outdated Spanish (I couldn't even look up words because they don't exist anymore). Never answered e-mails, unpredictable, unclear grading.

Comment:

Extremely sweet and considerate prof, very passionate and knowledgeable in her field. She struggled with the online format which made assignments and guidelines unclear sometimes. Lots of reading and quite a few essays. Great lectures, easy to participate with her.

Comment:

Definitely one the most amazing teachers I have had at McGill. She will challenge you and ask you to think but she is passionate and cares about her students. She will do everything in her power to help you if she can, even years after the class. I am very lucky to have had her and I only wish that she taught more classes so I could take them!

Comment:

Dr. Macchi is very demanding but she gives a lot in return. Her love of literature and culture is a refreshing break from a department that's heavy (but superficial) on technology and film. Dr. Macchi really cares about students and is always available to help you succeed. She's great!

Fernanda Macchi is a great prof. Her classes are a bit disorganized. I loved taking literature classes with her. If you want to improve your Spanish speaking and writing skills she will definitely help you. I loved taking the survey with her. SHE IS A TOUGH GRADER!

She doesn't respect her students when doing oral presentations (she would interrupt them and give her own opinion). No class at all. She will pick a grade for you and will never change it. I dislike her as a teacher, all she does is listen to her own voice.

Professor Macchi is a tough grader but a really nice and helpful woman. She is passionate about colonial literature and really cares about her students. Go to her office hours because she is very good at explaining things one on one.

Prof Macchi cares about her students and is passionate about Spanish literature. She can be a little intimidating in class, but is very helpful in-person. I found her to be an averagely hard grader, not sure why some people found her really tough. She has a thick Argentinian accent so understanding her is difficult at first for non-native speakers.

Comment:

Macchi is one of the sweetest profs I've met at McGill. She is always available for help in her office and loves anyone taking hispanic studies. Keep up with the readings and participate in class and you'll do well. She is a fair person.

Macchi is an amazing prof. You can't coast through her classes though, you need to read and participate thoughtfully. That said, she is extremely helpful if you have any questions and genuinely wants you to succeed. Ridiculously knowledgable about hispanic literature.

Very patient teacher. I took HISP199 in my first year and did not have a fluent Spanish she helped me a lot learn and improve! She is definitely passionate in what she does.

You need to speak fluent Spanish and be able to read books in spanish to take her classes. She is a very good teacher. She is passionate about what she teaches. She loves it!!! You need to back up what you say with sources. Great discussions! She's available at her office and is happy to help you. I took her class and loved them.

She basically picks a letter grade to give you in the first bit of the course, and no matter how much you improve she has already got you pinned to a certain grade and there's not much you can do about it. Very intimidating, but helpful if you make the time to go to her office. Don't say anything unless you can back it up well.

I had this prof in a small group context and she's great! She listens to her students talk - although granted she doesn't necessarily take into account what they think. But she taught me a lot and is a very sweet person who really wants to see her students succeed.

I've taken 5 classes with her and have enjoyed each one. She's extremely intelligent and gives very interesting classes. She teaches for the sake of learning, not for giving good grades. Her classes are not particularly structured, but you learn a ton. Don't take her classes if all you care about is a grade.
