I have taken three classes from Foster Hirsch at BC film school - in '99 and 2000, so I am writing this after 20 years. I now work in Hollywood, living my dream. I fondly remember my BC FIlm days. Hirsch was the most influential person in my understanding of my art. I hope he reads this one day and sees how much he has influenced his students.

My favorite professor at Brooklyn college. Ive had three classes with him and I loved them all. Smart, kind, and as the years go by he has started to care more and more about students opinions, which is refreshing. I will remember his classes very fondly.

If you are looking for an easy class where you get to watch movies and take quizzes... this is most definitely not the right professor for you. But if you are willing to work super hard for an elective class, TAKE HIM. He is the real deal

This professor is one of the most difficult I have ever come across. He assigns various opinion papers throughout this course and if your opinion does not match his, get ready for a low grade. He will encourage you to re-write and re-write all in vain. To work so hard and get a D+, is hardly worth the effort. Save yourself and skip this class.

Professor Hirsch is one of the toughest graders at Brooklyn College. His style of grading papers is very dated in old school ideas. Point is if u don't write the way he wants u to, then u are not getting an A in the course. He likes to give low grades and his lectures are long. Feeling sleepy beware! You will learn but stay awake or u will miss out

I received D grade for his class but it was an amazing experience nonetheless. Thanks to the screening and analyzing of all those unconventional films, I'm now able to understand films in different and new light. His lectures are very informational and interesting. Be ready to learn crazy English vocabularies and to see equally crazy films!

He's an intellectual through & through with a huge respect of the English Language. He doesn't hide his political views. His lectures are interesting if you can stay awake (his voice is a lullaby) He gives more reading &writing assignments than any other film studies class I've taken. An they're all due toward the end of the semester-Tough grader!

I'm so torn with him. I want to recommend him because his lectures are SO GOOD, I leave every class feeling like I really learned something. However, the workload in terms of reading and writing is so heavy that it started dominating my life. Don't take his classes unless you have plenty of free time.

Kubrick, Fuller, Peckinpah, Director's cinema. Very knowledgeable. You will be unable to not analyze the h&ll out of movies after you take his class, unless you are braindead. Good professor but a stickler on grades.

I took the Director's Cinema:Bergman with this professor and to say the least, it was the most depressing class I have ever taken. I agree with the person who said that he thinks he's teaching at Harvard but not only that, he makes the class rather boring by not letting the students in on the discussion too much.

Comment:
Taught zero film history. Much of the class was mind-numbing Freudian analysis and the rest was just his theories about the films rather than any historic connections. He rarely answers questions and discussion is basically who can yell loudest. Hard, confusing class, only good for those who love analysis. He's a nice guy but I don't recommend.

Nice professor, but he sometimes thinks he is teaching at Harvard and not a cuny college. He is a tough grader who expects his students to have much knowledge on the subject of film and write in very hard vocabulary.

He says attendance isn't mandatory, but you should try & go as much as possible,b/c his lectures are helpful for the final, since he analyzes the films for you so you don't have to on your own.For the final he gives many essay topics w/many movie choices,so if you've missed 1 or 2 you wont be out of luck. The final's a compare & contrast type deal.

If you want to take this professor, remember that he is a little tough grader. I loved the class, the lectures and the choices of the sci-fi films. He is very nice, but expects you to read all the books and write in really good language.
