Jim is an amazing professor! If you want to learn ASL, just do yourself a favor and take his class. Attending class is mandatory but it isn't boring so don't worry (I took four years of boring biology lectures. I know boring; his class isn't). Jim is harder on performance grading, but other than those, he is really kind and patient.

Prof. Lipsky is extremely kind and I really enjoyed his class! It was a lot of fun to learn sign language and he makes the class a very informal and comfortable setting where students don't need to be afraid to make mistakes. He also makes himself available outside of class if need be!

Comment:
Jim was a great professor for intro ASL this semester. He is super sweet and helpful, but beware that all of the professors in the ASL department are very tough graders. We had quite a few writing assignments that we were only given up to 3 days to complete, and 6 total performance assignments so be sure to make good friends with a classmate.

The best advice I can give you as a student of Northeastern University is to take ASL with Jim. Even if you don't want to major or minor in it, it's an awesome class, and he has a great sense of humor. He really cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. Not the easiest class you'll ever take, but for me, it was the most enjoyable.

I have never enjoyed a class as much as my ASL 101 with Jim. I took the class on a whim to fill my schedule and ended up liking it so much that I switched my major to include ASL. He was so helpful and nice. He always did everything that needed to be done and was so sweet and cute. I'm excited to take more classes with him. LOVE.

Jim is a wonderful person and a wonderful teacher. He is very interested in seeing his students succeed, which is extremely refreshing. I was naturally apprehensive when I found out the nature of the course, but heĆ¢€™s very willing to answer emails in written English, so reaching out to him is easy.

Absolutely wonderful professor! At first I was shocked when I found out he was Deaf and I was worried about being able to learn, but it turned out to be great. He has lots of experience with hearing students and he is very helpful so communicating really wasn't a problem. Class was always interesting and fun. I highly recommend him for ASL classes!

jim is a great guy, but a little hard to follow sometimes. he will sometimes bring up an assignment a week before giving out guidelines, then make it due really soon. however, he is usually willing to help you during office hours and his funny personality makes class entertaining.

Had Deaf History and Culture, and he was the worst professor I have ever met. In fact, I think the ASL dept is the worst dept in this school. He hated you if you weren't an ASL major. There is no way that u can get an A bc everything is subjective in grading and he hates all NON ASL majors. Don't take this class.

I have taken both ASL 101 and ASL 102 at my previous college and Jim is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He is rude and very cruel to his students. I am dredding having to avoid courses with him in the future because I am an ASL major. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH JIM LIPSKY!

Jim is by and far one of the best professors at NU. He works with you and isn't afraid to take time to discuss anything with you. He has geninue interest in your life, and is very understanding. He is a fairly tough grader, but it's well worth it beause he's working to improve your sign language. Very friendly guy, and I highly recommend him.

Jim rocks. I came to NU partly because of it's ASL program, as I hated foreign language. Jim is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, he's got a great sense of humor, and he's willing to go the extra mile to help out the students. This isn't the easiest course, but it's well worth it. Take it!
