Took summer class during COVID: very reading intensive- to be expected given it was a half semester course. Overall very interesting reads! Format was easy to grasp. His feedback helps u improve! Understood that no one enrolled was an ENG major- graded kindly bc of this. Normally HATE gen eds, but I loved this experience and him! Would do it again!

The RHW102 section is environmental science based and he's pretty left-leaning, so if you don't like that, maybe take another section. I LOVED this prof and this class. It really forced me to explore a lot of important issues. He's kinda a tough grader (but the grades improve over the semester), so get on his good side early.

Unless youre a extreme democrat dont take this class. Theres heavy reading every night, and pop quizzes often. I wouldnt advise this class for non-english majors

I took his class as a summer course. It was really laid back and I really enjoyed his book choices. Not too difficult of a grader and just a nice person in general

A pretty good professor who loves his subject. You have daily readings with frequent quizzes, 3 tests, 1 paper, and a final. Do the readings and participate in discussion you will be fine. He is liberal and fairly biased sometimes, which taints some of the class discussion, but he gives good insight overall. He's a good folk singer, too.

Dr. Watkins is a great guy who works his students to make them become better writers. You will most definitely work for your grade, but he is always willing to meet with his students about their work and will give helpful advice to aid in success in his class. Also, politics (specifically environmental issues) are a big part of Dr. Watkins' class.

Since I had a terrible teacher for my last English class in high school, I was really not motivated for this class. But Dr. Watkins was very eager to help me. Honestly, I regret not doing as well as I could have in his class because he is an excellent teacher.

I was an art major taking an upper level American English class for fun. His choices of books for the class are always great and discussions are interesting. Watkins is a standout professor and you are missing out if you don't take at least one of his classes.

The topic itself was uninteresting to me, but that changes. As far as papers, take them to him before they are do. He marks everything for you and then you just have to fix his comments and you practically have a guaranteed A. He's really nice and helpful as a teacher.

Took his gen ed Southern Literature course. Nearly all the time talked about gender and race issues rather than literature. It's like he doesn't care about the story and just wants to make a point. Still, he's a great lecturer and loves the material. Really cool guy. Chooses great readings. B+.

Watkins makes literature interesting. Doing the readings is necessary because of pop quizzes. He'll drop up to 3 of the lowest grades, though, which helps. Only one paper. Good selections of things to read.
