She's really blunt and says harsh things that can drain you. A professor should be encouraging yet her words are inappropriate. She forgets what she said before and blames it on you so be careful. She gives you good grades if you do exactly what she told you to do, which is hard because art has no answers.

Comment:

Is being "cruel" person a good thing for a someone in the teaching profession and a positon of authority ? You are either one of the chosen or not. A good teacher doesn't do this. Period.

One of the best professors I've ever had. Yes, at times she can be blunt, but it's always coming from a good place. Even when it seems like she's being cruel, she's doing it for your benefit. She genuinely appreciates her students and will do anything she can to help you if you're willing to work hard. Take her class! You won't regret it!

Karen brown: no sense of the idea constructive criticism. A teacher who will tell you your piece is horrible and then not tell you why. I would assume shes better for higher level classes, but she told my friend 2 days from graduation that she had to change to BA instead of BFA or she would flunk her to keep her graduation with no prior warning

Karen seems pretty off her rocker, and she really doesn't make her points clear to students. I worked my butt off in her class and was really pissed at her the whole time because I didn't get what she wanted me to do. BUT I really REALLY improved my skills in her class. Re-do assignments when you get the chance. And show up.

I like Karen as a person, but as teacher she's pretty useless. I don't care that she's cruel(she is sometimes), but she seems incapable of teaching people how to see and how to draw. I do not recommend her. Her gallery's cool though...

Yes, she can be a little off, but she really is brilliant. If you can handle her abrasiveness sometimes and not take it personally, you'll do fine. She doesn't tolerate laziness, so if you're not willing to commit to growth learning, don't bother taking a class.

Karen isn't mean, she's just honest. She can be a bit scatterbrained but that is part of her delightful neroticness. She is a wonderful women full of knowledge. Eat it up. If your all about some professor that is going to baby you and tell you everything is good, when it's really crap, don't bother.

As you can see, it's a divided crowd where Karen is concerned. She picks favorites and if you're not one of her darlings, you're an outcast and she makes your life miserable. Her favored students are too babied to be learning anything and her reject students are too busy being ridiculed. That's BAD!

very unclear on expectations; chooses favorite students and neglets all others. very negative about others work with no positive crit; "wow, that's awful..." or "boy, that's a disaster..." unclear on concepts of mass gestures, will degrade your work and only allows you to use her techniques.
