Really great at getting you ready for RHW 102, if you aren't the best at writing I definitely recommend her class. She meets with small groups a lot rather than the whole class so you really get good feedback and help from her. It is hard to get an A on your papers, but I would definitely take her again.

I took Introduction to Literary studies with Dr. Whelan at the suggestion of the chair of the English deprtment. Dr. Whelan breaks up the schools of criticism by introducing them with different genres of literature: poetry, short fiction, novellas, and plays. You should definitely do the readings, even if they aren't always interesting. Pop quizzes

If you didnt write based on her opinion she gave your essays bad grades. She didn't offer help during office hours and was often rude during class when someone had a question. Very intensive, we had a 25 page essay for the final. Very pompous and unsympathetic to the average college student.

Very hard grader. So much work in this class, prepare to be very busy with something due every class. Will write about 30-40 pages for papers.

Hardest grader I have ever encountered. It was quite unfortunate because I didn't get a choice in the professor I chose as I was an incoming freshman. You work pretty hard only to receive B- after B-. If you have a choice of getting another teacher, I would defiantly do so. By far the most stressful class of my first semester.

I could never really get interested in the literature, a lot of it was hard to wade through. Though the weekly papers were a little tedious at times, they can be useful for reflection and analysis so don't brush them off and actually take them seriously. She intimidated me a little bit, to be honest, but she really is nice and helpful.

I enjoyed this class. She made me a better writer with all of her constructive comments. He has a tattoo on her foot and I sent the whole semester trying to figure out what it was. She belly dances outside of class. Not your usual teacher but I liked her.

I feel like I have learned so much from this class. She presents information in a new way, but expects you to apply absolutely everything she lectures on. She is a tough grader and it is sometimes really subjective. I appreciate her accessibility; she is easy to talk to and is helpful somewhat, but the class is a challenge.

Dr. Whelan was extremely helpful and clear. She did not have unrealistic expectations, but she was not partial to fluff or assumptions in your arguments. You learn a lot, but you have to put a lot of work in.

She will take the way you've always learned to write and throw it in the trash, making you learn the entire process of writing over again. But this is alright because you improve A LOT. However, she's a very hard grader, so if you're a weak writer she's definitely not recommended.

She is terrible do not take her. She grades really hard and I never knew how to make them better. I got a C+ on most of my papers. When she did tell us to put things into our papers she told me i do not really need to say that!!

Grading is impossibly hard for freshmen. Do not recommend her. Somewhat helpful if you go to her, but still the worst grade I've gotten in any English class ever, AND at Berry.

Her class was fairly hard. I maintained a steady B in her class throughout. She formats her calss into groups so you only have to be there once per week which is nice. Students just need to make sure people at the writing center proof read and don't turn in sloppy papers.

While there is SO much reading for Victorian Lit, Dr. Whelan makes the subject fascinating. I thought it was going to be a boring class, but that has not been the case. She infuses the class with her enthusiasm for the period, and I have truly enjoyed it!
