Comment:
Professor Allen is one of the worst Professors I have ever taken. He goes off on tangents about other classes and information that are not associated with the class. He has you read from a textbook he wrote which is actually forbidden. He knows his history, but is not personable.

Dr. Allen is great! BUT his class is hard. He lectures and shows a documentary for like 20 min everyday. Its a hard class but Dr. Allen knows his history. Ask any question and he will answer it. Be ready to read. I didn't at first and had to catch up. If you take notes and listen, you'll pass. He talks a lot but get into the subject and you be fine

Professor Allen is a funny and approachable guy. He definitely knows his stuff - any doubts will disappear as soon as you see him (he's old). His class was tough, with tons of reading to do; if you did them though, you'll do just fine on the exams. Class consisted of two exams (final was all multiple choice), a paper, and a quiz.

Makes you buy two of his books that are praised by Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh so keep that in mind. Very old school & lacks nuance, syllabus is very confusing with no due dates, have to show up to class every time to know what's going on. Also no Canvas, limited knowledge of grades. Decent lectures, HAVE to be an experienced note taker to pass.

One of the toughest history classes I've taken. That said, Dr. Allen knows more about history than just about anyone. He will also clarify any confusion you have on assignments and exams.

Tough grader, lectures are spoken out, so you better be listening! Be sure to read everything thoroughly, if you don't then you won't pass. Go to class or you won't pass. Readings are too much! You better be a reader and a good listener if you're going to take this class.

Very knowledgable. He will address any confusion on the material you have to help you understand. There is a ton of reading but if you do it you should be able to pass no problem. Be sure to show up to class literally every day and take notes on everything he says because it will show up on the multiple choice. Read, take notes, you'll get the A

Don't think for one second that because it's a 200 level class that it will be easy. The class is full of information that is not common knowledge and can be a bit overwhelming. Also, do NOT take your phone out in class! That said, Dr. Allen will help you when needed, clarify material and you will learn a lot from him. Accordingly, he is a must!

There's a warning below not to take him if you're looking for an easy a. Ill reiterate that warning here. Dr. Allen knows more about US history than anyone ive met but do not take him if you're just looking to get by. However, if you don't understand something he will clarify it for you and you will learn a lot from him. Must take for history buffs

Knows a lot about history, but is a genuine tenured a**hole. He doesn't care about you unless you are a history buff. Thinks he's funny, not really tho.

Dr. Allen is extremely witty and engaging. He knows more about American History than anyone you'll meet. He was an undeserved reputation for being tough, but if you do the assigned readings and show up to class, you will pass! He is not PC at all, and frequently makes hilarious wisecracks. YOU MUST TAKE HIM!

Comment:
Keep in mind that Allen is the author of an ultra conservative American history text championing American exceptionalism and frequently and comically labels challenging views "Marxist." Otherwise an entertaining guy with old-school teaching style. Show up to class and do your work, should have no problem. Keep an open mind but think critically.

Dr. Allen is a witty lecturer and down-to-earth professor who actually cares if you learn. The class was super organized, and the assignments were easy compared to other history classes at UWT. Recommended if you need an elective and don't mind some reading assignments.

A very knowledgable invididual, however a bit overwhelming at times. I found his lectures to be jam packed with information that is not common knowledge. Dont take this course if you're looking for an easy A.

Funny, engaging, refuses to be politically correct which is nice from a college prof for a change; semi-tough grader, but super helpful when asked; clearly loves his job & loves working w/students; highly recommend

Here's the truth: yeah, he's a conservative and yes his book is particularly biased. But in class he's pretty reasonable. He DOES have a big ego. He's also fairly rude to students at times but at other times can be a really nice guy. Class organization was pretty bad, but the class itself was easy. Lots of reading. Not a ton of tests.

Dr. Allen is a great guy, slightly blunt, but the political incorrectness is refreshing. You can tell he is passionate about the subject he teaches, he holds a personal value to US history, and overall is a swell guy. He is tough though. Attend class as much as possible, read the material, talk with him. He'll work with you. Overall 4.0

Professor Allen is a great professor, although his grading can be vague. You have to talk to him right away if you have a question or concern because the class moves rather quickly. We watched a lot of movie clips, which helped. Would recommend him.
