Opens his first class by saying you're getting your money's worth because he's so accomplished, which is rich. No feedback on papers, not interested in helping A/A- level students improve or derive value from the class. Very disappointed as I learned more about his list of accomplishments in theology than I learned about theology itself.

My favorite professor at USD. SO CLEAR in what he expects, and is open to answering whatever questions you have. He is one of the foremost and respected scholars in his field, and never failed to blow my mind EVERY SINGLE TIME I went to class (and I took all three of his courses). He is retiring soon, so I would SERIOUSLY recommend this awesome guy

Dr. Espin has the best theology lectures I've ever had and I'm a THRS minor! His use of logic, reason, and jokes really get his points across. He explains everything inside out for you. Two short essays and a 25 pg group paper final and this class was an easy A. Would definitely take him again if I could!

not the nicest professor, but very knowledgable and class was very interesting. its not so bad if you take it during summer or intersession. 2 papers which if you write exactly what he asks you will get a good grade and 1 final. i would say fairly easy class, but put in the work for your writing assignments

This is the absolute WORST professor I've ever had at USD and in my entire life. Yes, it's an easier upper-divis theology class and the workload isn't bad, but he's truly awful. He's incredibly rude, condescending, and could care less about his students, forget any family emergencies too. He's very offensive and his lectures couldn't be more boring

Took Espín for Afro-Latin Religions. Fascinating course and such a great, knowledgable professor. Loved that he was blunt and informative. Hands down one of the best courses I've taken at USD. That being said, there were two book summaries, midterm, and final. He's helpful during office hours (schedule your appointment before hand). Take him!

I am used to taking helpful, kind, intelligent professors at USD, but he is the complete opposite. His lectures are long and his classes aren't discussion based, just lecture. He has a weird way of explaining things and sometimes seems like he's making his information up. No sympathy, no desire to help your learning.

I love Dr. Espin. He is clear-cut and honest when it comes to theology and different phenomena involving the subject. There was one test during the semester, 3 papers, and a final group paper. He is a super chill guy and I would definitely take him again.

This was my first theology class at USD the material wasnt hard we had 2 book summaries you literally have to just read the book and write a summary ( you will be fine if you dont procrastinte) with that in mind i read both books two days before the paper was due and did fine! the midterm and finals are based off lectures but werent hard !!!!

A GE class that will make you do more reading than all your other classes combined. He assigns 500+ page novels, makes you write about them and then will grade it with a check + or -. He won't offer any feedback on any of your work unless you go to his ONCE a week office hour. Extremely unorganized class that I would recommend you avoid if possible

Dr. Espin is an interesting and straightforward lecturer. He is clear about expectations. If you show up to most classes and take good notes its an easy A. Two 7 page papers summarizing books...also not bad! He is so fascinating that listening is no problem at all. Excellent subject, course and professor!

Do not take this professor. He will ruin your GPA. Extremely unreasonable and unreliable. Worst teacher by far in this department.

Professor espin knows his stuff. He can come off a bit strong but he is a nice guy. There is no textbook used in this class. Just 3 book reports, a midterm, and a final. Just show up to class and take notes and you will pass

Prof. Espin is a very knowledgable professor and explains lectures very clearly. Afro-Latin rel. is a fascinating subject too. You 2 book reviews both at 7 page minimum (easy but give yourself time to read the books) and 2 exams. He was absent on most days though, which was fine by me. I highly recommend this class, never a dull moment for me.

Dr. Espin knows his stuff! One of USD's brightest professors. He is very direct and does not sugar coat anything. I don't understand all the fuss about him, I think people just can't handle the truth that he speaks. Listen to him and you will learn a lot - there are valuable messages through his teachings if you keep an open mind. Take him!

Comment:
People who say this class is hard are retarded like most students at USD. Espin is a smart guy who invites students to think critically during class time. There is no homework, book reviews are easy. Exams are so easy they're hard. I failed exam 1 and I still got a B+. You just have to figure out that he is not trying to trick you on exams.
