I understand that he's not the most entertaining professor, but the bad reviews are clearly students who are dramatic and not interested in the subject. Even if his lectures don't count towards the class grade doesn't mean what he's teaching isn't relevant. Just be flexible and show him that you are being present and you'll be fine.

He is a nice guy and really smart, but his lectures are long a can be boring, and this is coming for someone who really likes history. The quizzes can ask very specific questions, the books they are on can be really heavy and tough to read (especially when u get to WWII). It's not a super hard class, but you will have to work, its not an easy A

6 quizzes (drops the lowest) and 3 book/movie reviews. Smart prof, who cares about students. Write good reviews, go to class - easy B. Reviews are not that hard to write and quizzes can be tough. Lectures can be used in the reviews if it matches the topic, but if it does not and you're not interested in the topic of the class you'll be bored.

RSL is a good professor, however, the lectures don't matter towards the course even though attendance is mandatory. HIST 220 was only graded on 5 quizes (based off books) and 2 papers. The quiz questions were extremely hard and detail about the book that was never mentioned in class.

Hated this class. No exams, the whole grade was based on 3 book reviews and quizzes. So basically, you read 2 books for the class and 3 more for reviews. And, the lectures have no point because all graded material is based on outside of class reading, yet attendance is mandatory. Nice guy, but I would highly recommend not taking this class.

Knows what he is talking about and has been teaching the class for a very long time. The lectures are long and if you are not interested in the subject will feel as though they are boring and terrible. If you like history then Professor Levy is great as he is very very well read on all the subjects he touches on.

MOST HORRIBLE CLASS I'VE EVER TAKEN AT UIC. he is unclear, boring, makes attendance mandatory, and overall makes you want to go to sleep. quizzes are based on long, and tedious readings. and book reports are also tedious as he barely offers any help on them.

A real genius in his field. His quizzes are tricky but easy. He grades papers at the grad level so show up with your game face on. He dwells in his own past, note taking isn't necessary, just read the books.

Overall pretty easy class! He's a really nice man and he knows a lot about the subject! Lectures are boring but you don't need to take notes. Go to class for easy attendance points. Quizzes are easy if you read the book. The papers are simple to do but him and the ta are hard graders. I got the most out of the movies he showed in class!

Levy was great, interesting, and VERY approachable. And he was nothing if not completely fair. His door is literally always open, and he gave slackers more than enough chances to get their act together. The bad reviews he got are the blatantly obvious temper tantrums of some Von Dutch pub crawl types who can't handle post-elementary education.

3 papers (4 pages) and 6 quizzes (drops the lowest one). He's very clear about what he wants on his papers but he's a very hard grader!! The quizzes are easy if you read the assigned readings. He is a very boring lecturer, going to class is pointless but you have to because of attendance. Don't take it if you want an easy A!

He's a hard grader. Class is easy, don't have to do much. He gives easy quizes but they are worth alot! Gives 6 MC quizes & they are worth 25% of your grade! I don't mind working hard to get a good grade but this was silly. He was fair about grading papers either and didn't return my final paper so I don't even know why i got a C on it. Horrible

Had him for hist 117, very knowledgeable and his lectures are very interesting. I not only learned about the holocaust but about how to more effectively study history. It is VERY easy to get a B/A in the class, the quizzes are very easy, as long as you read the material (maybe 150-200 pages over entire semester). Makes you think outside the box

He's amazing!! yeah, his lectures are long, boring and very dry (and even I fell asleep couple of times), but overall, he's great!! The class was easy. No tests, only quizzes and book reviews. The quizzes are hard, but as long as you read the book and write the review you're OK.

Overall it was an okay class, at the beginning of the semester I didn't expect anything higher than a C, as some times the lectures where quite boring. He was easy when grading the papers, so I end up getting an A in the class. If you are not a history major, or are interested in history, than this class may not be for you

No tests, only quizzes. Quizzes are on texts and are usually about 5 questions, so if you miss one question you're already down to an 80%. Very knowledgeable, but also very boring. Not too many people could stay awake or stay focused during his lectures. Attendance is mandatory.

Good teacher but no point in taking notes because he does not even quiz you on that stuff. just read the novels that he assigns and thats all you will be quized on. In this class you will have to write two papers and he will call you out if you just hand is a piece of crap that was a waste of his time.

Great teacher, but if you are looking for a blowoff course, you don't want to take him. The work is not by any means excessive, but he does have high standards and expects you to exceed them. Very interesting subject matter. As long as you are a good writer and show up to class, you will be fine.
