Comment:

I thought that the class was a lot harder than it needed to be also the first week we were told the quiz would be on mostly calculations and it was the opposite. Also the final was said to be based on the chapters but was definitely a cumulative final. His examples were pretty close to the test and quizzes so if you study that you should be fine.

Comment:

You are recorded during your tests, but for each quiz you get one sheet of notes front and back, and for midterm and final you get 2 sheets front and back, take advantage of that, it helps so much! He answers emails very quickly and always wants to help. His videos are very helpful. You have to put in the work for a good grade. I recommend him.

Comment:

Online summer class. You have to teach yourself as he gives out powerpoints. 7 quizzes, midterm and final. Quizzes are around 13 questions for a total of 4.29 points. I'm not a finance or accounting major, so all of this was very tough. Don't take him unless you absolutely have to. He's awful.

At times he was a little disorganized but overall he is a very good teacher. He is always ready to help and he is funny as well. We have 2 exams and 5 quizzes. As soon as you read the chapters and go to class you can get a good grade!

This is a tough class. He posted all of the info on D2L on the first day and never heard from him again. I tried to reach out to him, but he was on a trip the entire length of the class and wouldn't respond. All he did was post (outdated!!!) notes, and you have to do the rest yourself. Knowing what would be on the tests was impossible.

Great professor when it comes to knowledge on the topics he teaches. Teaches literally straight from the book and if you read end of chapter summary, you're pretty much guaranteed an A.

Severn's is a very clear cut professor. If you don't do well in the class, it's YOUR fault not his. For his quizzes, he lets you use 1 page of notes and for his tests, he lets you use 2 pages of notes front to back. He also posts videos on D2L if you weren't at the lectures. The grading is 2 tests, 5 quizzes, and homework.

For some reason I just do not like Severns. I definitely dislike the textbook he recommended for the course, found he sometimes made easy equations/topics more difficult than they are, plus there is no reason that this class isn't an online course...Also he is one boring professor my goodness is he repetitive. But getting a B wasn't all that hard.

You rarely need the textbook, he gives all of the information you will need in class and in his online videos. Just go to class and pay attention and you will do well on the quizzes and exams. I enjoyed this class and Severns was very helpful to me.

Severns isn't the best choice. Sorry. I would take Thiewes instead. Severns is nice, but not the most helpful. The tests weren't too hard and they were sorta repetitive. Just study the old quizzes and know how to do problems.

I was shaking about taking this class (I am not a finance major........but a marketing major) and am not all that interested in finance. Dr. Severns made very difficult material understandable. He is very reasonable and approachable.

Comment:

Insurance class I took with Dr. Severns was very boring. Exams were really easy (Is that really 400 level Finance class?? It was more like 100 level for me). He is OK instructor. One thing me and other students do not like about him is that he is ALWAYS (1-8 mins.) late to the class, and lets you go early.

I took this class online, which I would reccomend. His lectures online were very clear, the book is helpful further learning. You will more than likely use up all the time when taking the tests online. Working with someone else in the class makes it much easier.

BORING! But remember it is Employee Benefit Planning...! He is a nice teacher and explains things well... the material is just dull. The class overall is pretty easy, the test are comprehensive which sucks but they come right from his notes. He never gives out extra credit for those who stay and listen to the whole lecture!

Nice guy. Spends too much time on the first few chapters, which are easy. Then breezes thru the hard stuff. Only gives one example in a hard problem, and has no homework. No opportunity for practice, hard to study for tests. Very few points in class, so get good scores! No real schedule. Hardly use book until end of semester.

Had him for 2 classes in the summer right before graduating. He lost my final paper that I brought to him in his office the day it was due. Claimed I never did a paper and gave me a fail for the paper and very low grade for the class. Was a not a good way to end my career and MSU. Also, was very dry in his teaching.

Dr. Severns is always well prepared. He makes a rather dull subject interesting. I like his stories as they make the abstract concepts much more meaningful and understandable to me. Take the class! You won't be sorry.
