I dont understand how her rating is so high. Im surprised because her class was very difficult because of her. She grades hard and shes doesnt like it when students ask for help. Her exams weighted really high so if you do bad you would probably fail. The project was very hard and she didnt help me when I got stuck. I wouldnt take her again!

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! She makes the class very difficult to learn. The exams are incredibly hard and she is a very tough grader. If I were you I would take it at a different school since shes the only professor that teaches it. She teaches very fast, has an accent and gets frustrated when you ask her questions. I had a very bad experience.

Comment:

Professor Sophie is arguably the best professor in the IS department. Her lectures are clear as can be. I took her for 380 and 480. If she can't teach you Database, nobody can. The 380 project is more extensive than the 480 project but both give you valuable skills and knowledge. These classes were key to landing my first internship.

Sophie is a very nice lady, but the course is very tedious. She is a tough grader and there are very few assignments. She prides her self in how hard her class is, is always willing to help but it may take a few office visits and emails because she will lead you towards the right direction but will not give you the answer if you are stuck.

If you already have a high understanding of SQL and Python this class will be a breeze for you, but if not you might want to reconsider taking IS480 with her. Also, prepare to learn on your own and rely on Youtube for help, because the only reason to go to her class is to get the weekly homework assignment.

Professor Lee is the best! Took her for IS 380 and IS 480. The major component of 480 is learning PL/SQL. If you understand basic programming basics like if statements and loops you will be fine. There is homework each week and her tests are tricky. However, she curves a lot. The project as well will be time consuming.

She's goofy and funny. A lot harder than IS380. Print the notes out at the copy center!! Trust me, they will help you in class and you get to use them for the exams. Lots of HW and a big project. She does curve a lot. You have to "commit" (SQL Joke) to this class if you want to get a decent grade.

Sophie's Database class is fantastic. She provides a "textbook" that has all of the information required for the class, i recommend getting it printed and bound $20 @FedEx. The Oracle book isn't really needed, the information can be found online. Her project is crazy long. Do NOT put it off to the end. Expect to spend 12-24 hours. No Group Work.

She uses her own personal notes and though you are required to buy 2 texts the, only used for 1 chapter. So expensive & useless. The homework is easy but does not prepare you for the final exam. You can have high B or A averages then will bomb final because you're not adequately prepared for it.

She is a great teacher! One of the best teachers i have ever had. Although it got a C in the class, i would definitely take her again. Her project that she gives is something that you must put in work. She helps you throughout the way, but if you wait till the last minute then you will be left in the dust. The final was difficult for sure!

I absolutely loved Sophie's class! I only wish I had her for IS 380 as well, since my IS 380 professor wasn't that great. But as long as you go to class, do the homework assignments, and put effort into this class you will do fine. I got an A, but it definitely took a lot of time practicing PLSQL code. Take Sophie you won't regret it!

I like her class and way of teaching. The class drags for couple weeks when covering SAP modules. The programming part is similar to IS 480. Many short homework assignments and one project comparing 2 ERP systems. Prof. Lee is very helpful and her lecture notes (no textbook) are clear for all of her classes.

Great teacher, very helpful and clear. She provides many exercises to practice queries and PL-SQL procedures in her lecture notes. Exams are open book/notes so they are fairly easy. Workload is reasonable - 11 small homework assignments, 1 individual project which builds on the homework, and 3 exams with curve. One of the best teachers in the dept.

Comment:

Took this as a summer course and enjoyed it. She is very clear about assignments and tests and always willing to help. 6 simple assignments, midterm and final multiple choice based off her lecture notes from beachboard, and project (extended homework basically). Don't need book, just study lecture notes. Great professor, I would recommend her.

Great class. sophie is able to make oracle software seem very doable even though the system is very daunting. extremely clear with her explanations. 1 quiz, 2 tests, 1 project, and 8 homework assignments.

Dr. Chia-Hsiu (Sophie) Lee is another kind teacher. She does her best to teach a difficult subject. I think she does a great job at it. There are 8 HWs, 3 projects (actually it is 1 submitted in parts), 3 quizzes, midterm, and final. She also curves. TIP: Do not wait until the last minute before doing code, it can take you hours for simple results!
