He enjoys talking about his personal life and opinions for the majority of class (70% wasting time, 30% teaching), and the lectures can get very redundant. Take this class if you want to read the text and get an easy A, but not if you want the class to be interesting or have a likable teacher.

Hanks is a GREAT professor and knows his stuff! He really wants all of his students to pass his class and, therefore, will give you genuine feedback on readings. Honestly, if you cannot pass his class, then there there is something wrong with you... JUST DO THE CLASS READINGS and you'll DEFIANTLY see an improvement in yourself and your grade!!!

Literally wants everyone to pass the class and would be happy if everyone got A's. Very passionate about what he does and his focus is about helping you learn and address your weak points. You will leave this class a better speaker and have newfound skills to use every day. Take this class! He doesn't pick on you, he just cares.

He is enthusiastic. He demands full attention and will make you the center of attention, consistently. The course content is helpful and deals with psychological theories that will help you understand people, and how to deal with your shyness. Lectures can get boring and redundant. Read the books and participate as much a possible. He likes that.

Second time around with professor Hanks. Class sessions seemed like self-help seminars. He's a sharp man and very engaging but at times it does feel like an indoctrination. Only a mid-term and final, that's it! The books are out of date and seem irrelevant because he teaches based on personal experiences anyway. He's great, but I liked 140 better.

If you are shy and hate presentations and you actually want to get better take this class. It is fun, easy, and if you take it seriously you will be a pro at oral presentations. Prof. Hanks is a great professor with fair standards, listen to his constructive criticism and you will get an A easily.

I was speaking to a friend of mine who is helping her daughter select her classes for the upcoming semester. Professor Hanks immediately came to mind as I took his class more than a decade ago, and he will always remain as THE best teacher I have known. I witnessed his genuine interest in others and the passion he has for teaching. Thank you!

Classy guy, very unique experience, take it seriously and it will change you as a reader, writer and person in general. It’s tougher than other speech classes because of what it entails(interpretation) but he makes it feel like a piece of cake if you do what your supposed to. Practice, listen to his advice and enjoy the best 9 week class ever!

Comment:

Fortunately, Cerritos offered the Speech 140 class, taught by Professor Hanks, in their 9-week sessions. It was amazing to watch Professor Hanks give each student the attention they needed to help them achieve their individual best. It is even more amazing that he accomplishes this in only 9 weeks. I highly recommend this class.

Mr. Hanks is an amazing professor. I'm so glad I was able to take him for Speech100. This man is like a walking encyclopedia. He is smart,patient, kind, and genuine. He never passes up an opportunity to start a conversation with you and helps you with shyness. He requires 2 books to read and the class is based around these two books.

His class is one of the most important classes i have taken. Reason being is because he explained the material in the best way ever. I learned alot about myself and my communication skills. I used to be afraid of speaking in front of crowds and that fear is gone now thanks to Prof Hanks, and his two awesome textbooks. Also, don't forget to do the readings. It is a very rare class you will have in Cerritos. I would say he is very innovative, creative. He teaches you many life useful techniques of speech using transactional analysis.

He is BORING. He makes you get 2 books must read them to pass class. Has no Real grading system. Although its not mandatory to do a speech he will get annoying if you don't do it. If I could go back I would get another teacher.
