Comment:

I would not recommend taking this class. If you're one of the few POC on campus, he will make you uncomfortable. He teaches only from the book, so essentially you are teaching yourself. If you've taken French before, it will be a breeze, but if you haven't good luck. The class is extremely boring and in my opinion a waste of time.

Comment:

It's best to have a previous knowledge of French before taking a class with him. He would forget when we have Oral exams so he would cram them back to back within the same week. Not very consistent with grading either. Mark points off one exam but did not do the same for another.

I took my Gateway class with Professor Callahan. He's a nice guy but odd. The discussions weren't very exciting, and he assigned so much reading! I did well on all of the assignments (one A- and the rest were A's) and he gave me an A- for the class. Overall, quite frustrating.

Callahan is very clear in what he wants from assignments. Quizzes and tests are pretty easy if you have a background in French. Online homework is kind of annoying but wasn't used very much. As long as you show up for class, you'll be fine.

While he is a nice guy, I couldn't understand a word he said in French, even after studying in Paris for a semester and taking all my classes in French. I'm not sure what dialect he speaks, but it made for a very frustrating several years since he was the only professor who taught the upper level French courses.

I was in his Gateway class and he was horrible. He gives you random grades without telling you what you could do better. He would also email us the night before class with a hundred pg reading assignment. Overall he was horrible

Overall Prof. Callahan a good teacher. He is one of the most knowledgeable professors I've had so far. The class I took with him, however, was a bit difficult and he was unclear in terms of assignments at times. If you plan on taking one of his classes I suggest you find one with a subject you are already interested in as his lectures can be boring

Prof. Callahan is a great guy & a really informative professor. If you want to go to class & get your unchallenged A, he may or may not be the prof for you... If you want an enriching collegiate experience and a positive challenge, don't miss taking a class with him at IWU. It's an opportunity!

He subbed for his wife a week, and I will never ever take him as a prof EVER! I'm in french 101 and know nothing. He came in and did not stop speaking french until the class was over, i understood nothing. and he's kind of creepy

yeah, he sucks. Basically, Orlando is the easy one and Callahan's the hard one. They're both bizarre. Orlando's a spitter when she talks and Callahan likes to go on opinionated political tangents. Tangents nonetheless but he really needs to learn to keep his opinions to himself. DON'T TAKE HIM!

He expects upper level quality in lower level classes. Honestly though, for lower level classes, he's not entirely unreasonable. Yes the grading scale is weird, but in the end it all works out. His favorite grades on papers are 83 and 87. Take the class with a grain of salt.

He's a nice guy, but a horrible writer and a horrible grader. Bottom line is, if you don't agree with him in your essays, you get graded down. He's supposed to be helping us develop our voices as writers and opinions, and all he wants us to do is parrot what he thinks back at him. Avoid him!!!!!!

Worst teacher ever. Avoid him at all costs. inconsistent grader, NEVER prepared for class. But if you complain about your grade he'll back down. If all teachers at IWU were like him, I'd transfer.
