She is very clear on her expectations and is a tough cookie. She has called me out multiple times which has made me uncomfortable in her lab. I'm afraid to ask her questions and can't go to her office hours because they are during my classes. Pre labs are difficult and almost impossible for a beginner Chem student.

While she may seem like a tough cookie at first, Dr. Van Engelen is an amazing teacher who held study sessions once a week and always made good on her office hours and then some! If you put forth a sincere effort and show her that you genuinely care, then the class itself becomes much easier. Would definitely take a class w/ her again.

She is a "very busy" person who won't make time for you to get into her office hours. if you ask questions she will simply restate the question and not actually help you, and she will straight up laugh at you if you ask her a question, apparently if you don't get it you are a dumb person who should never have take the class in the first place.

Terrible teacher. Many group projects and insults students and laughs right after it like it doesn't matter. All over the place while teaching.

Van Engelen relies heavily on making use of group activity under a guise of comprehension but its a testament to her own inability to connect with students to explain course material. Points clouded by nasty attitude & she has a gift for talking down to students. Truly, truly, an awful experience for intro. If given the opp, any other prof > her

She is a very difficult, rude professor who was all over the place when lecturing, jumping from one subject to the next. She would say things like "you should already know this", and then skip over that portion. She was very condescending to students, talking to them like they were stupid. Very disrespectful to students. DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!!!

Worst teacher I have ever had in my life, goes out of way to make students feel uncomfortable, feel dumb for asking questions, and very condescending towards students. I would not recommend this teacher to my worst enemy. Your biggest mistake in college would be getting this professor.

Dr. Van Engelen is not only a rude and hostile professor but a horrible one as well. She fails to teach with lectures and gives you work sheets and just expects you to know what to do. Her practice exams are nothing like her actual test. She is very judgemental and makes the students feel dumb everytime they ask a question. I do not recommend her.

This class was very difficult, as least for someone who is very new to chemistry. The text book isn't very clear, and sometimes Van Engelen says to not use the textbook for certain chapters, but when it comes to the exam, it's based on the text book. She does try to help you with the class if you are struggling though.

Shes a pretty food professor, but a stickler about things. At times i felt like i was in a grade school class. Her lextures are good and if you like to learn in groups its a good way to understand the material from peers

It is always best when a professor is clear about what he or she wants out of an assignment and knows and UNDERSTANDS the subject material. Dr. Van Engelen all too often does not.
