He is the worst person. He does not help when you ask how to improve. Tested on his opinion of content, "choose the best anwser." I would not ever take this course again!!! Graded completely on four tests and 20 percent attendence. HE DOES NOT BELIEVE IN TECHNOLOGY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Doesnt write on board; all lectures.

Comment:

Overall, I would say that Hofsommer is a good professor. He's kind of old-fashioned in the way that he teaches, though. What I mean is he simply lectures, and sometimes references a map, definitely references the textbook, but doesn't use power points, and only rarely uses the chalkboard. Tests are relatively easy if you listen and read.

He lectures without any presentation structure, does not go chronologically, talks way too fast, confusing, tons of reading that gives you way too much information out of order, let's you use a notecard on the test but nothing on your card will be on the test, asks questions that don't make sense, will not help you know what to study, DO NOT TAKE!!

Took this as a general, and it was tough. I'm not a fan of history to begin with, and he made it worse. All he does is lecture, and his lectures don't follow the book. He is very knowledgeable, but not very helpful. You have to read and take notes to pass. He expects you to be in class everyday. He got mad at me for being sick.

Only 1 test! Short papers due every week, but it's what your grades are based on. He is super funny. No textbook which is nice. It is a class you get to argue your opinion in so classes do get heated. He is really easy to get along with and get help from. Great professor.

I really enjoyed the lecture for his classes, YES all he does is lecture, occasionally a pop quiz. f you pay attention and take notes, ask questions, you will have no problem getting a good grade in this class. Tests cover lecture and textbook readings.

Worst history professor at St cloud. As people said earlier all he does is lecture and its not clear AT ALL. Im a history major and taking several higher level classes, yet he treats it like the equilivant if not higher. Tests are difficult even if the book was read and notes taken...AVOID AT ALL COSTS

All he does is lecture. Attendance is optional, a few quizzes to see who is in class, but it is self-corrected. Very little, if any, of the lecture is actually on the test. Some of the questions of the test were not in the lecture or the book.

If you like to read, take this class. Attendance isn't mandatory but still come cause he does attendance by random quizzes he doesn't grade but just looks at who was there. For test you have to read the book and take very good notes in order to pass. Hard class and all he does is lecture but the professor is a really nice guy.

Tests are fair, you have to read the book in order to pass the class. You have to be in lecture all the time, attendence is graded. No ideas as to what is on the test, no email and very hard to get ahold of.

most boring class/professor ever. all he does is lecture, has no notes. taking notes off what he says is a waste of time, everything is out of the textbook. also can't get ahold of him (no email/ never on campus). only graded on 4 tests and attendance, fail one and your done. avoid

You have got to read the textbook. Taking notes in class is a waste of time. I took notes everyday and didn't read the book and failed almost every test. He has attendance tests randomly and that's how you get your points. It's a lecture everyday so don't take this class in the morning. Very nice guy, but insanely boring.

He is a nice guy that does know a lot about history but has a hard time teaching it. He lectures about a couple events the whole class but then none of it shows up on the test so using the book is SOO important if you want to pass. Overall, if you can take the class with someone else do just for clarity, but if you really want a challenge take him.

I recommend this prof. I only went to class every other week and basically coasted for most of the semester and got a B+. I put very little effort into this class and got a fine grade for what it was worth. If you can't get a good grade in his class you probably shouldn't take any future history courses.

Hard class, a lot of note taking and memorization. The professor was not bad i thought, sure the class was hard but he did a good job teaching it
