He is a wonderful artist technically but maybe not suited temperamentally to be a professor. He is very particular of what he expects which can be good in you own work but he isn not very good at inspiring students, and said once that he used his own skill at our age as the A benchmark which I felt was ethically questionable.

He gives tough love, but worth it Makes you work hard & earn your grade, but makes your work better. Very respectable professor & artist. Not always easy but always tries & genuinely wants to help Engaging conversations is the best way to work with him. Sees potential in everyone. Talented & pushed me to improve my skills tons, but expects A LOT from his students. There's no choice in having him, I was stuck with him for 2 major classes at the same time, twice which was way too much work for me. After 4 years I'm not graduating... let's say if you're good at never missing a single class & never late you'll be fine -_-

A prof who teaches with the intent of helping, but not fully shaping a student's work. He gives ideas and wants to see you try them, but wants each student to decide whether or not they work. His suggestions are just to make you think- don't assume that everything he says should be immediately put into your art. Great prof overall.

James Edwards is the best teacher at UMASS. There is so much you can learn from him, he just love art. He loves seeing his students discover their own passion, and he loves being a part of it. James is a very challenging professor, and he won't accept slacking. If you love what you do, and you respect him amd the class, no problem.

Okay so James teaches based on his mood...its day to day He can be a really constructive teacher but 80 % of the time he is extremely CONTRADICTORY! I remember he told me to put something in my illustration then when it came to critque he asked why it was there and why I made that choice...CAUSE YOU TOLD ME TOO JAMES! hes good to look at though!

Clarity level = close to zero. Unnecessarily large vocabulary, very philosophical, and over analyzes. But he is a good guy, and as long as you do the work (there is A LOT of it though, and the projects tend to be interesting, but very complicated and a lot of effort required), you will get an A.

He assigns a lot of (often very tedious) work, short deadlines, and does not like work that doesn't resemble his. Very, very critical, and often contradicts himself. But he's very experienced in the field, and is talented, so even if you dont like him or his class, its hard not to respect him. Totally different person one-on-one.

First off, Edwards is a hard teacher, and sometimes the projects can be the most aggravating thing in the world. BUT, he taught me to paint. He's difficult, but he honestly wants to help you improve your skills. I didn't like him at first, but then I realized that if I'm serious about art, I need teachers like him to push me, and he's a nice guy.

anyone who didnt like james as a professor, should not be majoring in illustration. james forces us to work hard and inspires the highest quality of work from us. once in a while his deadlines are quick and require a seemingly absurd amount of work, but thats the field of illustration and he's doing the best he can to prepare us for it.

Jim is the best teacher I have ever had. He is really tough, but he taught me more than anyone else has and the work you end up with from his class is awesome. He is a wonderful guy, and I will take as many classes with him as I can

He was incredibly hard, but i learned sooo much from him. The workload may have been ridiculous, but its what will happen in the real world so it doesnt bother me now it did then however. It was a real experience and all my pieces came out amazing.
