I loved the class but didn't realize he was such a tough grader. I got As on everything except the visual analysis... I got a D. We got the visual analysis grades back the day of the final and he didn't offer any way to fix this. He's very passionate and knowledgeable, but unclear. If you don't like classics don't take this class

Greek Vase Painting was a very interesting class. Professor Oakley really know this material - he was the author of one of our textbooks. He is also super helpful outside of class. As long as you pay attention in class and you put effort into knowing the vases he says are important, tests are easy.

Do not take this class unless you absolutely love Greece in the BCs. Lectures drag, are extremely dry, and downright painful. A lot of little details that in real life mean nothing. Powerpoints were made up of about half of his vacation photos. Thoroughly painful.

Professor Oakley is extremely passionate and well-educated within the subject of Greek Archaeology and Art. During lectures, he is always perfectly willing to answer any questions or to clarify dates or names for students who ask. He is very friendly and can be funny at times. The class requires a lot of memorization, and you CAN NOT miss a lecture

Professor Oakley is extremely knowledgeable about Greek Archaeology. Maybe it's because I am interested in this topic, but I really enjoyed his lectures. You can tell he's super passionate about the artifacts and has seenstudied them firsthand. Exams involve memorizing a lot of details, but all in all, I would take the class again.

He is a TERRIBLE prof! Incredibly boring and uninteresting. He is NOT at all helpful in office hours, so I do not know what that person is referring to. Worst prof. I've ever had--bar none.

I recommend this class for those that love memorizing minuscule insignificant details for hours on end only to receive a less than satisfactory grade. He gives three tests a semester, each of which is worth a third of your final grade. His syllabus says that he curves when the grade is on the border, but I found this to not be the case.

Comment:
He's extremely interested in the subject but extremely unclear about what is on the tests. I have studied for days on his tests to get B's (not complaining), but there are only three grades in the class so you basically seal your fate after the first one. Hard class for GER fulfillment.

Nice guy but class is unbelievably tough. Studied so hard for every exam and still got a D. Most of my friends did equally poorly as well. Interesting subject, but not so great for your GPA.

Not an easy course, but Oakley is very knowledgeable and seems like a good person. Throws a lot of information at you via Powerpoints and terms lists, so it's hard to know what's most important to focus on for exams. It's certainly not an easy way to fulfill GERs, but a good course and professor for those with an interest in the subject.

Oakley is amazing! I've taken Greek with him and he's really laidback and smart. Greek Art & Arch is a hard class because it's a lot of material, but he is very helpful if you go to office hours and show interest in the material. Also, he's a big deal in Classical Archaeology.

Professor Oakley's class is definitely my favorite course this semester. I thought the class was really tough at first, but when I took the first test I realized that I knew everything that was on it. The lessons started becoming more interesting, and you can tell Prof. O is really passionate and enthusiastic about what he is teaching. Love him!

Negative reviews are coming from people who didn't try. At the beginning I thought the class was really hard, and there is a good deal of information presented, but the tests aren't nearly as hard as I expected. As the semester's gone on, I've come to enjoy Dr. O's humor and the class itself. Don't be scared off.

Worst professor I've had at W&M. He is not helpful at all. He doesn't care about his students. Completely unclear about what he wants on his exams. I went to office hours, but that was a waste of time. I studied a lot and still only managed to get a C- Killed my GPA!

I agree with those that have said he is THE most boring lecturer on the planet! He is so vague with what he expects you to know for tests. It's ridiculous! This class is not what I expected. All he covers is archaeology of Athens. And he gives you utterly pointless information about the dimensions of the buildings. GPA killer! Uou would avoid him!!

Very nice guy, but very boring. It's clear that he has a lot of passion for the subject, but that causes him to lack clarity in what the important themes of the class are. Not impossible, but I would recommend another class for GER 4A/5 if possible.

Feels like an overload of information, with very little guidance as to what the most important themes are. He really is a great guy, so friendly and easy to talk to, so if you're in the class and struggling, go talk to him! Hard to pay attention in class, I recommend downloading the ppt and following along while taking notes, or else you're screwed

Comment:
This class is annoying and difficult. It is probably not worth the pain if you are just trying to fulfill a GER. Oakley is so nice and reminds me of a skinnier Santa Claus, but the only grades you have are 3 tests throughout the semester and it's hard to study. The material is so broad that it's painful.

Comment:
His lectures are very confusing. He doesn't follow a logical order, and often forgets dates/ artists for pieces. Doesn't make clear what is important and what isn't. Write down everything he says. Lectures are crucial. Miss a day and you're screwed. Avoid this class if you can, despite the fact that it fulfills two GERs.
