Teaches straight out of the textbook so make sure you have that from day one and do the reading before coming to lecture, he literally just projects the book onto the screen. All homework was out of the textbook and is due every lecture. His office door is open 99% of the time and he is very willing to answer questions outside of class.

This was a great class on NMR techniques. Any chemist using NMR that wants to find out more about Fourier Transform, pulse programs and explore simulator activities can find value in this class. You also learn how to acquire 1D and 2D NMR spectra using a live instrument w/samples. You have the opportunity to write code for your own spin system.

He is a brilliant professor, we are lucky to learn from him. He always made time beyond office hours with an upbeat and enthusiastic attitude. He posted section review videos on BB for our benefit. this course is extremely difficult covering 12 chapters in 12 weeks. no matter who the professor, if you are not dedicated... you will not pass.

He's difficult to understand. Also, he doesn't use concrete examples and numbers for math problems (which is a problem if you learn by doing). He tries to help, I'll give him that much but to be honest I learned more from my lab professor than I did from him.

The partial credit is really nice and he gives good feedback on problem solving questions, but lectures were confusing and didn't really help much as far as content. I pretty much lived off the book.

I am not sure who the person below me is talking about, he does not offer extra credit as I was in the same class. This was my 2nd time taking this class with him as a professor due to him refusing to bump me up a miniscule percentage for a C last year.

I was excited and ready to take another Chem class because I got a 96% on my chemistry I final. For Chem II, it only took me a week to realize it won't be the same this semester. Hoffman is extremely smart. He also truly wants you to understand the material and get a good grade. Do the extra credit. And put 100% effort and BUY CHEGG! Got an A:)

doesn't even answer questions. he either laughs at us and makes us feel even more stupid or completely ignores the question like he didn't even hear it. probably because he doesn't even know the answer. i highly recommend taking this with another professor or at a different school. sub-par brockport, very disappointed in this one.

I never understood a word he said all semester. The only thing worst than his thick German accent is his handwriting. Asks if there are any questions then ignores them or tries to make the student seem stupid. Spends the whole class time on 2 math problems LITERALLY and his failed attempt at a flipped classroom forces you to teach yourself

STOP RIGHT NOW.T he fact that you're here means you're considering him for a class. DONT DO IT. His class is Hell on earth. He runs a flipped classroom so you have to teach yourself everything so if you dont have a strong background in chemistry you are screwed. He has a thick German accent so you cant understand him. Im retaking w a diff teacher

Comment:
Lectures consisted of one or two math problems per class that he would do by himself on a projector, sloppily I might add. Tests were ridiculously hard, as everything conceptual was up to you to learn, which is what made up 90% of the tests on average, with two long math problems at the end. He's hard to understand, rude, and never willing to help.

As I post this comment I am immediately disappointed to notice I only have 350 characters to express the frustration, anguish, and unfathomable disappointment I have experienced with this course as a direct result of Dr. Hoffmann. I have never trusted a professor less with my education that Dr. Hoffmann.

Laufen. Führen Sie so schnell und so weit wie Sie können. Schau nicht zurück. I am from Germany and speak fluent German and English. Even I have no idea what this man is saying at times. The only reason I could recommend such a class is if you are looking for a challenge. If this class is required for you may God have mercy on your soul.

The man is undoubtedly smart but cannot put the material in layman's terms whatsoever. Everything in these other reviews is true. Thick accent, bizarre teaching style, the whole nine yards. If you end up with a good lab prof like Dr. Kelley go to him for help.

He had an idea that simply did not work. His flipped classroom approach made it impossible to do well in the course. Thick accent, rude to students, ridiculously hard tests, and awful handwriting. After mandatory clicker questions 90% of the class gets up and leaves because he doesn't teach. You basically have to self teach yourself if you are able
