Best teacher I have ever had in any subject. Passionate about the art of storytelling. Keen insights. Funny, easygoing, cares deeply about writers and helping us understand the business and how to make the most of our natural talent. Loved his writing style and continually refer to his textbook.

If you are truly interested in screenwriting there is no better mentor than Richard Walter. Everything he has to say is exactly what you need to know to become a successful screenwriter! And he manages to teach it in the most hilarious and enticing way. How many times have you heard an entire lecture hall laugh out loud?!

A general intro to screenwriting, that is, writing movies, a relatively new medium just over a century old. This class is open to undergrads, which is a shame because they take it as an easy A and don't show up. Richard is great. Those that don't get him, don't get that writing movies is about story, and good stories are not easy to write.

He's completely approachable and genuinely interested in supporting people's writing. He tells a ton of stories, but those should be valued because they illuminate what he's saying and what he's teaching. Fantastically entertaining class from a legend.

Anyone that disses this man's skills, just doesn't get the magic going on in his classes. I'm sorry you Undergrads are bitter you took this class and it was shockingly different in structure and feel than your life sciences classes. Or, that you found out you didn't have the chops to be a screenwriter. Get over it! Walter rules!

People need to understand that this guy is a living legend and an institution and instead of complaining because he's telling stories... soak them up and learn. He's got great things to teach and it's not a coincidence that UCLA places so many writers in the industry. Sit back, learn, and be entertained.

Much better than most people acknowledge. Can wander in lectures, but engaging, has a no-bull**** policy. Simple exercises and final, but still challenging. Helpful, but was intimidated approaching him and his TA. Sometimes reads hate mail directed to him in class. Would not like that I'm using run-on sentences. Awesome professor.
