Truly a character yet in all honestly a great teacher. He's able to grab attention with his charismatic personality and his vast knowledge about literature and nearly every aspect of life. He's know to go off on tangents but with in the seemingly randomness, theirs are many lessons to be learned that can be applied to almost anything.

Comment:
Viscusi's obviously very a knowledgeable and intelligent professor, but he is VERY easily distracted. He goes off on a one-hour tangent almost every class. The upside is that he only assigned two papers and a couple of quizzes!

Professor Viscusi is a gem. If you want to be inspired, if you want to truly understand why the study of literature is life affirming, if you want to learn about the underbelly of the literary world, then you should study with this professor.

Professor Viscusi is fabulous because he is hilarious, human, eccentric and knowledgeable. he presents a low key alternative conversational reality to all the seriousness in academia. I enjoy the heck out of him.

Comment:
While this guy spouts off positive and life-affirming platitudes online and in his poems, in person he is a great wielder of the weapon of contempt. While I was reading a fellow classmate's fiction, he leaned over and shared, uninvited, some hostile, derisive comments about the writing. Not at all respectful, he's a narcissistic phony and a windbag

Comment:
Prof. Viscusi is clearly a brilliant and funny guy. However, he assigns a book a week to read in the Italian American Lit class, and if you are lucky he spends 10 minutes discussing the text. The rest of the 2.5 hours is spent telling personal anecdotes and rambling monologues about politics/class/history not really related to the texts.

Comment:
Bob Viscusi was my professor for Lit and Society in the early '90s. He has excellent command of the material and his commentaries were always on point and very funny. You don't have to agree with his politics to get a lot out of his class. Just keep an open mind and work hard

Comment:
Professor Viscusi is an excellent professor and I highly recommend taking his class. Be prepared to do a lot of work, but it's well worth it. He's a brilliant guy, but without the tedious intellectual arrogance. He is very funny and (perhaps because I agree) I find the commentary entertaining and helpful in keeping the class engaged. First rate.

Comment:
Interesting but sometimes inappropriate and irrelevant social commentary. This professor wastes loads of time speaking about personal issues that are totally irrelevant to the class. Does not use most of the books on the reading lists. Professor tends to ramble, sometimes interesting, sometimes not. Don't expect to actually learn anything.

Hysterically funny and extremely interesting. He takes his time with the subject matter and relates the readings to todayĆ¢€™s society. He grades according to what you deserve and that is it. Great professor, one of the best in the Grad Dept.
