Comment:
Professor Hirano is nice and he's very easy-going. However, he's not that clear in his lectures and he sometimes goes over something that he already mentioned literally 5 minutes before. He provides little homework and gives no tests or quizzes, it's just the Midterm and Final. It's an easy class if you are ready to study independently.

I took Teiichi for Japanese 1&2. These classes CAN be very easy (especially 1) and the quizzes are VERY much based on the textbook. If you are passionate about learning the Japanese language (and not just the media culture) you will love this class.

Comment:
Hirano Sensei is a lot of fun, and the class is very enjoyable. However, I think a lot of people trying to get into his class had dire misunderstandings of what this class would be. It is a language class, and a hard one, at that, because of the writing styles. You have to work for a grade, but Sensei will help you, and he makes it fun.

I took him for Japanese 1 & 2. He goes over the book lessons in class. You can do it alone. I taught Japanese to myself, and when I asked him a question about why certain things are different than others, the answer was "Because it just is." It is discouraging that students who have spoken it for years take this class, he works at their level.

He's cute and friendly, but he makes no sense. It's nearly impossible to read his writing and you might as well just read the book instead. He gets side tracked easy doesn't understand a lot of questions.

Very fun and laid back, but not at all clear, concise, or organized. He follows the book, but rambles and is easily sidetracked. Lessons are not well structured and I find myself doing most learning on my own.

Took both his classes and I LOVED them! Sensei might be a little uncomprehending at times but he teaches Japanese with such passion, its fun. The class is easy going, and he is very nice! Word of advice: really, and I mean, REALLY, take notes, and don't miss a single class. Study hard and you'll be amazed how much you learn about Japanese.

Hirano-sensei is funny and laidback. Lets you turn homework in as late as you want, and only two tests in the semester (80% of grade). Only complaint is that he doesn't interact much with the class....lectures, then you have to learn on your own mostly. Some practice in class, but not much. Also, lectures are boring. Sensei is still awesome though.

Hirano Sensei is the best and funniest Japanese teacher any student could ask! His stories are both hilarious and interesting (including the Evil Raccoon). He makes learning Japanese very fun and easy for everyone to understand. I would definitely recommend him to anyone who wishes to learn this beautiful language!

He makes Japanese fun and easy. I usually end up skipping some of my classes every now and then, but Hirano made me want to go to school with his intriguing teaching techniques. He also doubles as a dance instructor for Latin music.

Has many interesting stories and has tons of patience. Great at explaining the intricate language and he looks kind of like the mad hatter from the disney version of alice in wonderland to boot. Definately reccomend this class if you have interest in the subject.

I did an Independant Study course, so I did not get to see Hirano Sensei often, however, the course work was engaging and kept me motivated to finish. Japanese 3 is only kanji study, but you learn 120, so it's definately worth taking if you're a serious student. Realize that you will only see Hirano Sensei about 3 times during the semester.
