I took this as an asynchronous class during covid so take this review with a grain of salt. I watched about two lectures and read zero chapters and aced the course. Have an intermediate understanding of the American Political System and you'll do fine. He is very passionate about what he teaches.

Only 3 exams, but all open note and online. Take good notes & listen and class and you'll pass with a great grade. All the poor ratings are clearly from students who did not take complete notes in class. He knows what he's talking about in class, & can be monotone, but overall just listen and take good notes, you'll get an A & a good understanding.

Dr. Kelley is beyond well versed in mass media. Take very good notes and show up to most lectures, and you'll get an A . All his exams are open note and on canvas. No excuse for getting a poor grade besides not putting the effort in/listening in class, as he grades very reasonably. Only take this class if you LISTEN TO LECTURES.

Not a great professor. He only graded our class on about 3 things the whole semester and his exams are all written responses on very specific questions, and he hardly gives partial credit. He doesn't tell you what is going to be on exams and asks very specific questions that he might have briefly mentioned for 30 seconds in class. Do not take him.

Dr. Kelley exams are more like random trivia questions that occasionally draw from what you've learned and are not reflective of what you've learned or put into the course. Do not take any of this man's classes if you care about your GPA at all.

He only takes grades from the huge paper you need to write as well as midterm and final. You do bad on one, you are screwed. He is very knowledgeable but has no idea on how to make it interesting. Very hard class to pay attention in and kids would fall asleep daily. Wouldn't recommend if you're trying to get a high grade and its my major.

Most boring lecturer I have had at Miami. I was expecting a lot more from this class. He is very unapproachable and exams are quite difficult.

I honestly have never learned more from a single professor than I have from Professor Kelley. He is an expert on the media and the American Political System. If you care about the media politics and American politics in general, you will find his lectures very interesting and insightful

Tends to ramble during lectures. Both times I have taken him there has been a book with required readings that are not specifically discussed in class, but questions will be on the exam that you can only answer if you did the reading. Exams are all essay, but he is very helpful during office hours if you missed anything on the study guide.

Great Guy, Great Class! learned a lot about the inter workings of politics by taking him. Don't let people scare you by saying he is a tough grader. If you do the work, and talk to him about editing your paper, you will do fine. He is very willing to help students out and I would take him again.

This was a special-topics course on the 2016 election. He's a pretty blasé, average teacher. He can be funny; He can be boring. I expected a lot more out of the class, but it wasn't that hard. But, the term paper was extensive and hard (not sure how he grades yet). The midterm wasn't bad at all and he graded that pretty fair (it's all essays tho).

The topic is very interesting, but he make it so boring. I honestly thought about dropping the class so many times. This tests are harder than they should be and he assigns reading that he never talks about. I would not suggest taking his class.

You may go into the exam thinking that you know everything, but you will most likely get a lower grade than you expected. There was a lot of reading, which he never goes over or mentions. It is very hard to know what is important. The class is harder than a 300 level undergraduate class should be. It is not really a POL and more journalism.

Dr. Kelley has very interesting and funny lectures and loves to talk about day to day politics. He gives basically the questions for his tests beforehand, but his tests are essays and he grades very tough. It is difficult to understand what he wants from an answer. Lots of readings and the paper is challenging. Overall, the lectures make up for it.

Honestly I was not impressed with Kelley. He was a nice guy and was sometimes interesting, but overall it was hard to know what was important, because his lectures weren't well organized and there wasn't much homework. He just assigned mountains of reading, and then made the tests pretty hard. I was not a fan. MANDATORY CLASS ATTENDANCE

Dr. Kelley is a great professor. He makes any subject interesting with his sarcastic commentary, plus he is very helpful and approachable with any questions you may have. He knows a ton about American politics and loves teaching, so you can count on him to give good lectures and clear assignments. Every test is all essays though, so be prepared.

Facts: 3 exams and 1 essay (worth 27%), generally gives exam reviews a week before test, did not stick to the syllabus. Opinions: really vague on most things (including: what to do for the paper, some of the questions on the tests, items on the exam reviews, and even the syllabus). However, the information was interesting and he does help when asked

Comment:
Dr. Kelley is really funny but mostly because he is usually always in a bad mood. However he never takes this out on students and so he is just a lovable grump. The class is mostly just long lectures and then essay tests, which he grades pretty hard. The other assignments are very easy. If you answer questions he will like you.
