Comment:
Terrible professor. He made it so that you could not edit the notes he provides (does he think we're going to pirate his virology notes? Really?), he makes the exam absolutely awful, and does a terrible job lecturing. He's retired now I think, though.

Comment:
Though the course material could be interesting, this class was terrible. The material was presented very unclearly in a disorganized fashion and the expectations for the amount of content to be memorization were far too high. Dr. Carstens is hard to approach, his answers to in class questions were condescending and are often not clear.

Comment:
He is the worst prof I've ever had. His lectures are boring, heavy, hard and disorganized. If you listen well and listen hard, paying 100% attention you may find that he provide some good explanation, but his tone and voice made it impossible for me to focus. Very arrogant. Not approachable at all, would rather mock you than actually answer your Qs

Very tough. Expects you to memorize all his slides, including side notes on nobel prize winners. Exam was very detailed. He's not lying when he tells you to memorize everything. Didn't learn much from his class. Everything was memorization heavy. WORST PROF I'VE EVER HAD. DO NOT RECOMMEND. DON'T TAKE THE COURSE UNLESS REQUIRED.

Absolutely horrendous prof, lectures are very long and hard to sit through, material is very dry. Expects you to memorize copious amount of material for the final exam, unrealistic amount of work. Very tough exam with questions that aren't even related to course material. Believes memorization is learning.

Comment:
One of the worst professors my far throughout my undergraduate career here at Queen's. His lectures are often confusing, disorganized, and useless, so be prepared to study the textbook in-depth after class. Professor Carsten is also very unapproachable. He would always leave after class, and does not seem very willingly to help out students.

smart but cant teach or motivate. he just sits in class and listens to the students discussions. needs to be more active with his students. he also doesnt like when students correct him, so just go along with his mistakes.

Can't explain concepts at all! If your in any of his classes of working in his lab use Wikipedia or any online source for help don't ask him. You will get humiliated and you won't learn. He's 4 th year class was horrible. I'm serious there is too much work and therefore not enuf time to actually enjoy anything. Don't expect much from his teaching

Emotional roller coaster ride if u do any lab work with him (I did work with him as a summer student). And in 220 he lacks the ability to teach. He also forgets a lot so don't try to remind him of anything he said in class aside from the direct notes he uses. Nice prof most of the time but has to realize that students aren't machines.

He can't explain concepts properly. He is smart but he can't teach! I went to the other prof who also taught the course to explain to me the concepts that Carstens failed to do. I wouldn't recommend this prof at all.

OMG hes awful. He can be a nice prof but he instantly snaps when you make a mistake. whats the point in learning if your alwas worried about saying something wrong and getting humiliated. dont take, dont even do a 499 with him. run fast, run far

The only thing I really like about him is how obviously passionate he is about his work - Carstens is a poor instructor. Unclear on what material to focus on, he hardly references additional resources to use, his notes are long and unclear, and he is ineffective at explaining important concepts.

Very good at encouraging students to become the best scientists they can be. Though he is critical and has high expectations, I learned a ton from him - about everything from designing experiments, to critically analyzing results, to giving presentations. A lot of this has really helped me out in grad school!

I had the class this year, and I think he's improved a lot. I found him very approachable and pleasant, it's just that the material is dry. Extreme memorization. Though he uses the EXACT same questions in the final that you can find in practice exams. Even if you suck at Micro, you can collaborate to figure these questions out. Labs are great too!

The Worst professor in Micr 221, by far. It seems like he teaches things that make sense in class, but when you ask him a question, he almost purposely gives you a long, ambiguous answer that is unrelated to your question. Good luck trying to do well in this class

Carstens is a horrible prof who cares for nothing but his research. He is rude and unapproachable and is useless when it comes to helping his students. IF YOU CAN AVOID THIS GUY, DO SO!!! The first prof in Micro 221 is amazing which makes Carstens seem even more terrible!

It's true, the work he gives you isn't easy. But it's either sink or swim. I've had no problems with him. In fact, he's helped me with just about everything throughout this project. He's even stepped in and helped me out when other parts of the department have tried to bully me around. Awesome prof, I'd say. Awesome record collection too.
