Comment:
I'm an Art History Major, Honors student and have a 3.8 overall GPA at UW-Madison. However, I am getting a C in Geiger's renaissance art course. She has unrealistic expectations and is completely disorganized (the class didn't even have a syllabus). When I went to her office asking how I could improve she told me that I wasn't working hard enough.

The most insufferable professor I have ever interacted with. The experience of her and her class landed me crying in my advisor's office, asking to undeclare my art history major (I was dissuaded by a grad student, thankfully). Disorganized, mean, careless, and all around poor teacher. Worst class I have ever taken.

Geiger is by far the hardest grader I have ever had-she literally expects you to remember everything from lecture and the readings for the exams. Her lectures and readings are disorganized. However she is very approachable in office hours and does want her students to succeed. I would avoid in the future unless you'e willing to put a ton of time.

She's willing to help students with their questions. But her reading material is a total disaster, so disorganized. It is painful going through the reading material to find things.

She is a great professor with a ton of knowledge. It seems like most of the raters on this site haven't taken art history classes before. Memorizing tons of artists/titles etc is normal. She may be disorganized but she is helpful and promotes good research techniques. All of my other professors just had me memorize, she made me think about the info

SHOULD NOT BE AT UW! Terrible professor, terrible person. Harsh, condescending, uninspiring, a neanderthal with technology, irrational with her expectations and grading methodology, and insanely disorganized. She didn't have the syllabus completed until the very last day of class! An old school professor only interested in her own research.

Really nice professor though pretty disorganized. Easy A class. Fair short answer exams. You don't have to memorize a million dates, artists and titles like other art history classes. I would recommed it.

Comment:
The syllabus and course reader are an absolute mess. The professor is pretentious and shows off her knowledge instead of teaching it to the class. There are no prerequisites but she expects you to have an art background. Must memorize 120+ pieces of art for the exams (including their contexts), but only tested on 12.

Don't take this class thinking the interesting material will make it easy. LOTS of reading, & the reader is horrible - hard to navigate & boring. Wants you to be as knowledgeable as she is - & she's a walking encyclopedia. Comes off as condescending. Does not use learn@uw. Exams are short essays (know EVERYTHING about the art & use sources)

She is extremely disorganized, condescending, and should not be teaching the class. The reader is atrocious. She'll make you remember everything for IDs, and is harsh when grading.

The information is interesting, but there is absolutely no organization. the reader is an atrocity, she made us memorize 103 images over spring break and had the midterm the monday we got back. She made the test the day before we took it and the vague guidelines she gave us were useless.

I adore her! Although is disorganized, unclear and sometimes harsh, she can smell a slacker from a mile away. Make an effort to get familiar with her, show an interest in what you're studying, and go to class and she wont be a problem. My class had to write a 15-page term paper, which was hella scary, but everything turned out fine.

She, and her course reader, are incredibly disorganized. She's not clear about her expectations, goes on and on about works and then says "but you don't need to know this for the test" and therefore doesn't have enough time to discuss whats actually on the test. It's too bad because the content of all her courses is really interesting.

The material is interesting, but she's condescending and rude. No organization to lectures, just a bunch of going back and forth between different pieces and using italian words nobody knows. She pretty much wants an entire essay for each ID on exams, which is ridiculous. She expects you to know everything she's ever said. Very harsh grading.

This class isn't too bad but you should do the reading and start memorizing most of the artworks from the very beginning. She's pretty funny too but the amount of works to memorize and the papers are pretty difficult.

She knows her stuff. Very easy tests and she gives extra credit for additional lectures and trips. If you can't memorize, do not take this, the tests are just memorizing dates and artists. The TA really matters but she teaches the honors section. TAKE HER SECTION (she doesn't give quizzes like the rest of the TAs)

Where do I begin? No structure to lectures, and overwhelming amount of material to know for exams, and it didn't help that lectures were boring. Stay away from this one.
