Comment:

John is definitely old school. He's not going to pull any punches and will tell it to you like it is whether you like it or not. This approach is not for everybody, but if you can think for yourself and are willing to work hard without being spoon fed, then John's your guy. I learned a lot from him in private study and we got along very well.

I had John for Jazz Masters of the Bass at Berklee. He's a great upright player with the old-timey swing stuff (1920s). But we all had an awful time in his class. His feedback wasn't constructive, and he just seems like a bitter guy. He doesn't seem happy in life, and that shines through in lectures. A textbook example of an "angry old man".

We had John for our Jazz Masters of the Bass class. John generally made most of us feel tense and, on occasion, stupid. His class wasn't necessarily difficult; it was more personality clashes. Except... he seemed to clash with all six of us. I found his teaching style confusing, as I wasn't always sure what his expectations of us were. Bummer.

Good guy. tells you what you need to work on/what you are doing wrong. if you are doing something well he'll tell you that too. very helpful...to the point, which is good so you know what you need to work on.

Not to talk trash, but my personal experience is that this guy is very cocky and rude. Instead of trying to encourage and help students, he upsets and discourages students from trying to progress or learn.
