Comment:
She enjoys what shes talking about but the class is very lecture heavy. She tries to make lectures fun and include people in the conversation and asks about gossipy thoughts which I like. However if you miss a class you could end up not doing well because the papers and exam are based off of in class discussions. She gives good feedback though

This class is very dry as is the material you read, very lecture heavy, and just really unenjoyable. If this was not a required course for an English degree, I would not have taken it. If your thoughts or opinions don't line up with Dr. Macfarlane's, she will respond in a condescending and rude way. Feedback on assignments isn't the best either.

This is the dryest class I have ever taken. Textbook is boring. All you do in class is you read the assigned reading, and then in class, you discuss the chapter and Dr. MacFarlane asks what your " gossipy thoughts" are on the chapter. Dont take this class. She marks way too hard and then her ONLY feedback is "Good argument but dig deeper".

Dr. Macf is super smart and you can tell that she genuinely loves her subject. However, the way she teaches reminds me of many of my high school teachers and is borderline pedantic. The best strategy is usually to agree with what she says, as arguing your opinion when shes not expecting it is like beating a dead horse.

Personally I think Karen is a good prof because she knows what she's talking about. This being said I think she is petty and unfair towards students who don't have the same opinions as her. As well if she doesn't like you she will show it. She will purposely try to go out of her way during a lecture to embarrass or make a student feel below her.

Karen isn't great as a professor, as a person she's easy to get along with and very personable, as a professor she is a very tough grader, and while she provides lots of feedback it is not always helpful feedback, and her teaching style is hard to follow at best. I took a 1st and 2nd year course with Karen and both treated as much higher levels.

I really like MacFarlane-she and the other English professors are why I'm now an English Major(plus my love of reading!) I honestly couldn't have asked for a better professor-she's great to talk to (I still think about some of the points from class, and our own conversations!) and she cares about you as a student, and about your success.

Karen is the best! She's always supportive- if she trusts you. Because she appreciates a good work ethic or at least an attempt at one. Not a class to take if you can't read critically or at least attempt to- she doesn't want surface stuff but is willing to help you read deeper if you do struggle. In all Honesty, Karen is a sweetheart. Best Prof.

Macfarlane is a tough grader and she expects a lot from her students. I had her as a first year student and again in second year.. She's tough but in my opinion she fully prepares you for the following years. She is always available to help and answer questions. She is quite brilliant, which can be intimidating but she knows her stuff.

I'm still taking this class and I adore this prof. She is warm and welcoming, always willing to help. She makes learning English Theory fun and when you don't understand a concept she will take the time to make sure you know how it works. Also, her shoe collection is to die for.

I credit her with my vastly improved essay writing. She is absolutely a tough prof, but I have also never been so motivated to work hard by any instructor--ever. Her classes are enjoyable. If you engage with the material and ask thoughtful questions you will do fine. If you want an easy credit, look elsewhere. She is one of my favorite professors.

I <3 Dr. Macfarlane- she is so cool! She is enormously helpful when trying to write essays. Make sure to participate in class. The one thing I wish she did more is give her own opinions/knowledge rather than mostly having students comment on readings. I wish I had taken more classes with her.

I have never pushed myself harder or felt I got the most out of a course with any other professor than I have with MacFarlane. She expects a lot because SHE KNOWS YOU CAN DO IT. She is always willing to help, is available outside of class time, and is enthusiastic, understanding, and knowlegable. Not for the faint of heart, but a great prof.

Holy crap, she is the worlds HARDEST marker. These people must be geniouses or english majors, but this woman is the reason that i'm not. In person she will make you feel stupid and she makes nasty comments. She fails people if she doesnt like them, so get on her good side. She's pure evil.
