American Politics and Diversity was my worst class last year.. Had to write very long papers and a lot of them. Big presentation as final, he is a very hard grader.

Mel is by far the worst professor I've ever taken. I am an "A" student and I had to work my tail off just to get a C-. And when I went to his office, he told me that he thought I was smart and was glad I was doing well in the class??? I spent many a night in tears over this class. DROP NOW WHILE YOU HAVE YOUR SANITY.

Comment:

Went to every single class and participated in discussions. Read every book he gave us and did the little assignments. Wrote the maximum number of pages on his large assignments (5-8 pages and theres three of them). And still only passed the class with a low C. He is a extremely tough grader. and is not helpful at all. Good Luck!

Hard grader, however takes his job seriously, which I can't say for most of the professors at Miami. If you can't write a solid paper don't take his class, because he'll destroy your paper. As a high schooler i took his class and was the only one who aced all his papers. Overall, he is an extremely hard grader, but will make you a great writer.

Dr.Cohen unnecessarily tears his students down in all of their work. He pretentiously and unfairly grades. He has NO effective grading scale for his papers. This is coming from someone who did well in his courses. If you are a poli sci major, you should just wait to get to Oxford to take your major classes. What a waste.

Incredibly hard. I received the only A in a class of 16 (7 of which dropped). Lectures are REALLY good, and teaches REALLY well, but expects a lot of political thinking from students.

He grades harder than your average english prof. IF you want to do well in his class you have to excel on his papers which is very hard to do. He isn't very helpful in the material when you have questions. But he is a good professor overall but very very strict. This is the only class out of the semester that I did poorly in.

Dr. Cohen was an excellent professor. He challenged us, and you definitely couldn't slack or turn in late papers, or risk losing points off your grade. He cares deeply about his students, gives everything to his classes and demands excellence in return.

Took course in fall 2010, good professor, friendly. Grades way too hard on papers though.Only class i didnt get an A in.AVOID for sake of your gpa unless required. (pol 142 required for criminal justice majors btw).It was a 4 credit class when i took it so that is why its harder than most classes but a b- equals an a- in your gpa when its a 4credit

By far the worst professor I've ever had in my entire life. I'm a straight-A student, and I worked my tail off in this class to scrape by with a D+. He is highly prejudiced and his grading makes no sense. Please, do yourself a favor and never, ever, ever take this professor. He is awful, and needs to be removed from Miami.

Mel definitely loves Teaching however he teaches this class like everyone in the class already knows everything and are preparing for their PHD's he grades essays harder than any English professor I have ever had. He also prefers that student agree with his world view to get anything above a C.

Okay, Mel is a super nice professor but if you're looking for an easy grade, I would avoid him. The discussions were interesting but he just grades sooo hard. He's unclear of what he wants & a stickler for MLA - which, even though I used the actual guidlines, killed my grade. I managed a B- & I'm glad I took the class but be prepared & PARTICIPATE!

Dr. Mel Cohen is a terrific and caring professor. He rarely leaves campus and is ALWAYS willing to assist the student in any way possible. Whether you need guidance or insight into your future or if you simply need help on an assigned paper. However, he is a very strict grader with high expectations for his students. Best prof I've had.
