Comment:
Entirely too much reading, and his IDs for tests are absolutely brutal. Is entirely too harsh on historical figures, dismissing important documents like the Napoleonic Code and calling them a failure because it didn't give women the right to vote in the early 1800s. Goes off on tangents about dismantling the electoral college and other causes often

Bouton is the best professor at UMBC. He is smart and passionate. His lectures and book on the American Revolution give a whole new interpretation of the rev. Quite frankly his interpretation makes a lot more sense than the typical middle school narrative (more evidence for his argument too). He is tough, but you will learn a lot!

One of the best professors I've ever had - he's truly made an impact on my academic career. I've had him as a professor a few times now and his lectures are always so engaging, I love attending class. The essays and weekly reflections mean you need to do the readings, but I found it all to be pretty easy and enjoyable if you dedicate time to it.

Very dry lectures, interesting reading assignments but they taught more they he did. Extremely unclear grading policies, essentially failed an essay because he didn't agree with my thesis and gave absolutely no feedback on how the paper could've been better. He literally wrote this isn't "an argument essay", and then provided no further feedback

Decent grading criteria. But unless you're willing to agree with him trying to prove each and every class period that the Founding Fathers consisted almost entirely of elitist, evil white men who oppressed everyone else and could never do anything right unless they were literally forced to, you're probably not going to like his class.

Whole class designed to discredit historical figures. His leftist politics affect every lesson and test. Obsessively focused on social justice and race. His grading is fair but his direction and feedback are massively long-winded. He also isn't great at keeping grades up to date on blackboard. Nice guy and interesting but not worth the difficulty.

Writing heavy, but it's not hard to manage. So passionate in all lectures that were all super interesting. Going to the class itself isn't mandatory, but it's the only way to get any of the info that's on the exam because he goes over everything. Loved the class and will be taking more!

Professor Bouton is a great professor! Very enthusiastic about the subject, and it is contagious! I wasn't interested in history before this class. I felt like I didn't even really need to study because I remembered so much from in class, it was just that interesting. Weekly discussions (papers), but you could miss one, 3 non-cumulative exams.

Professor Bouton is definitely among the better UMBC professors I've had over 8+ semesters. He is very knowledgeable about the material, lectures are excellent, and his workload, while high compared to other 300-level courses, is manageable because he allows you to skip 4 of 14 weekly assignments. Pretty good prof all in all.

He is a very good Professor when it comes to his knowledge. When it comes to the course work and grading it's not as enjoyable. He is the hardest grader I've ever had at UMBC. Takes his job too seriously and expects you to write pages worth of online discussions every week. Not an easy A or even B;they're are better professors at UMBC you can pick.

Very passionate about the American Revolution, and very knowledgeable. Attendance is not mandatory, but the two tests are mostly repeating information from class so you should attend regularly. The paper did lack some clarity in the directions, but it was not too bad. He's very willing to work with you and is not a difficult grader. I recommend him

Great teacher because he modeled what good work looked like...he allowed the student to find meaning in text as long as you supported your answers with evidence...showed students how to be historians! Great stuff!

Great professor and an interesting class. I gained a lot of new insights about the American revolution--this isn't the stuff you learn in high school and Bouton is a passionate guy. Challenging but not overly difficult.

Lots of work to get an A even if your trying. Looses his temper often at petty things and is big on embarassing students who may accidentally leave a phone on by answering the phone.Way Unecessary to do that. We pay his salary and he treats the class like idiots. He is very knowledgable but I won't repeat his class b/c of that. It's really too bad

One of the best teachers I've ever had, if not the best. I actually wanted to go to class to learn because he's great. There were also many times where I wanted to burst out laughing in class because of the way he talks sometimes. There is quite a bit of homework though since you have a writing assignment due every week.
