Comment:

Howard has a brilliant musical mind, gives a great lecture, and is good at answering questions on the fly. Lecture is important, explaining how the text examples work in real music. Reading is minimal but critical. Do the assigned score study/analysis (even though it is not graded) or you will have trouble. He is hard to reach outside of class.

Comment:

Dr. Howard is the best teacher at CSUN for harmony. Other professors will pass you if you show up and seem to try, but Dr. Howard actually cares about the material and if you show up and actually try, not only will you learn something, you will actually pass the class.

Worst. Class. Ever. He definitely knows what he's talking about but sometimes he forgets that his students are coming from a place of either barely knowing anything about harmony or nothing at all. LOTS of homework, never gives grades back so we have no clue how we're doing in class, disappears the moment class is over, pretty condescending.

Howard is interesting. I think he is a great lecturer, but his grading criteria is hazy. He lays it out, but sometimes doesn't follow it. Homework is constant and at times hard to handle. Luckily, if you pay attention to what's being taught and try your best, it'll be ok. Do your HW, show up to class (IMPORTANT!), and talk to him if you struggle.

Did not offer any work all semester. Told students he would post quizzes throughout but never did. 3 concert reports were the only assignments. Gives you a long and tough final. Irresponsible and unreliable

This is the worst, most irresponsible professor I have ever had. Quizzes were posted the day they were due the first 4 weeks, then we never heard from him again. Unable to track him down, no work has been graded, he won't reply to emails or messages. This class is not worth the stress!! Please save your sanity and money! Do NOT TAKE this class!!

Class was not passable in my opinion. No study guide, so we were basically required to memorize half of a textbook. Often responds to questions with pretentious sarcasm. Class was 3 hours, yet there was no time to hand back quizzes? Must track him down during office hours for scores. Can't fully put into words how much I dislike this professor.

I've had 3 classes with him. Musicianship, Music History, and Harmony. And in each class he was everything a professor should be and more. So I don't know where these negative comments came from. He isn't easy, but an ideal professor in my opinion. And this is coming from someone who failed one of his classes, passed with a B when I retook.

Dr. Howard is inspirational. His classes are not for the uninterested student who only thinks of a class as a means to an end. If you work for this class, you will be rewarded with a wealth of knowledge and, more importantly, a higher respect and deeper love for music than ever before.Kostka was hard my first time around. But he made it make sense

This professor was the worst ever. He does not post quizzes on time, does not grade papers in a timely manner and disappears to where you cannot contact him for weeks at a time, without concern to what this does to his students. This was an online class, but even so - This would be an easier class if he just did his job!

Dr. Howard was an awesome harmony teacher. I came into the class terrified, and came out of it with B's both times. As long as he can tell you try hard, he will cut you some slack, but he is still a hard grader and has no patience for slackers or those who don't go to class. He is very intelligent and entertaining!
