Papers, quizzes, and discussion every week. Ridiculously hard grading. It does not matter how much work or time or thought you put into your paper, if he does not share your view, you will not pass.

Fantastic professor who knows how to get his students excited about Literature, theory, and dare I say it? editing! Deardorff's teaching style adds an enjoyable narrative-oriented twist to traditional lecturing. However, his grading can really hurt. The keys to success in his class are MULTIPLE revisions (5-6) and MULTIPLE proofreaders per paper.

Comment:
Dr. Deardorff did not give effective feedback for the weekly essays. I would receive grades that I felt like I did not deserve. His grading seems very subjective. It seems like he takes off points for having different views than his own in quite an arrogant way. He never gave us a good rubric for the essays. Essay assignments were not clear.

Terrible class and overall experience. Grades based on what he feels and not what is in the paper. You will not do well. He will not give a good grade. Best of luck if you take a class from him- I couldn't seem to turn in anything that he liked. Took off points for things that weren't in the writing rubric. I would not recommend him to anyone.

One doesn't need to be rated a 5 on the hardness to be effective. Deardorff grades whimsically, with an air of arrogance. He was NOT open to teaching what he required. Helpful sounds good, but he is a wolf in sheeps clothing!

While at Cedarville, I took several classes from Dr. Deardorff. I learned so much in his classes (particularly Lit Analysis and Theory). Now that I'm earning an MA in Lit, I can say that his classes were better than the classes I'm taking now! Take him as much as you can (even if it hurts your GPA). I learned more from him than anyone else.

My favorite professor! He is SO sincere and downright hilarious! Really draws you into the literature and EVERYTHING you read and study is connected, forming one grand thread that runs through the course. This helps you internalize the information so that it LASTS for a lifetime!

Absolutely the best prof the English department has to offer! After four classes with him, I can say I learned the most from Deardorff, not only about literature but also how to engage the culture around me. He and his wife Julie take personal interest in students (they even invited us over to his house and paid for us to cook food!).

I'm a self-diagnosed writer - and I could not pull an A in this class no matter what I did! On the other hand, he was one of the most helpful profs I had in any department. He took a personal interest in students and was challenging. Challenging, but worth it, esp. if you like to write.
