I took PHIL 1050 online during the summer. He understands that it is summertime so the class is very manageable. The course is 6 weeks, and each week you write a one-page essay on the reading for the week (usually 4-8 pages) and participate in the discussion forum. Grading is fair and re-writes are available are optional for each essay.

Has a very interesting method of teaching that can come off as disrespectful at times. Not many assignments, but that's not always a good thing. His feedback can also be quite hard to understand, especially online, because of all the typos. Also, expects people to be experts at philosophy in an intro class... which is pretty ridiculous.

Symbolic logic WAS demanding and it is a lot of work (a lot of hard work). However, once you get it (with Joe's INCREDIBLY clear teaching) - the exams are seriously the easiest exams I have EVER taken. Pay attention, do an hour of logic a day, and you'll get OVER 100% on the exams like most of us.

Comment:
Dr. Salerno is an incredible instructor. His advanced logic course is demanding, but he is a fair grader and actively wants his students to learn the material. The effort demanded is well worth it, even if logic is not your passion. He is very patient with--and cares about--his students, is quite dedicated, and a tremendous asset to the department.

He is an awful teacher. Lectures are extremely boaring and he talks about the same stuff over and over again. No homework or text books. 2 papers and a final re-write of one of the papers. His instructions on the papers are not clear and then critices you on your thoughts because what ever you say is wrong and what ever he says is right.

A dead lookalike of Yanni, which proved very distracting in taking the class. Overall very easy though

Intro to Phil is easy with him. Lecture gets boring sometimes cause its philosophy. But there is NO homework nor book. Several readings which are boring. 2 papers and final is re-write of one of the other two papers. He grades them easy as long as the papers have basic stucture.

By far the easiest A I've gotten at SLU. Great teacher, & he really encourages questions. I'd definitely recommend this class for anyone who's at least decent at math but not crazy about philosophy.

Dr. Salerno is awesome! He's incredibly brillant but quite down to earth with students. Will always work with students to help them with anything. Fair, clear, and an excellent addition to the philosophy department.

Very knowledgable and enthusiastic at what he does, though is more demanding than many of the other instructors for those in the intro class. Does rather well with explanations.

The class was not that bad. If you participate and do decent on the papers you will get an A. He really likes it when people speak up in class! NO TESTS!!! However, he takes attendance and his lectures are far fetched and boring.

This was an introductory SLUINQ course. It was designed to be easier on the freshman--smaller class size, more one-on-ones with the professor. Teaches vague, and easily runs his sentences in circles making it even harder to understand. Only saving grace is no tests in the course.
