Comment:
Ned just wanted us to tell him how smart he is and give his own opinion back to him. It was easy but he's not a good teacher. Show up to class and take notes and then tell him what you know he thinks already and you'll get an A no problem. Kind of uninspiring.

DO NOT generalize information, the prof expects you to go beyond. I am taking my third class with Dr. Schantz and I never got an A. He is extremely helpful outside of class but a tough grader, so if you stumble across theories don't hesitate to nit pick on his literary generosity. Overall, take advantage of his time and get ready to work.

Comment:
I agree with someone's comment that he indulges too much in his own takes on the material. Readings are assigned, but theories rarely get explained. He teaches his subjective opinions about the films but oftentimes there is no theoretical basis to support his arguments. Also, the choices of films are very white and American (mostly Hollywood).

GREATEST HUMAN BEING AND THINKER EVER. If you're in the McGill English department and NOT taking a course with Schantz you're doing yourself a disservice.

Hands down the best class I've ever taken. He requires you to think seriously and closely about the material but it is very, very fulfilling. Aside from being very intellectually stimulating, this class has taught me so much about myself and relationships and the grand scheme. Yes, you have to put in hard work. But the payback is phenomenal.

easily one of the best classes i've taken at mcgill. schantz is clearly brilliant in his own scholarship, but is also fantastic at leading discussion, and chooses fascinating course material.

Comment:
Schantz struggled to devise course lectures he could fit into the time we had. Pretty much every day he tried to cram multiple theories in, instead of just focusing on one or two approaches, and he hardly got anything across. Snide and condescending responses to peoples' well thought out remarks. Only interested in his own take on the material.

Wonderful wonderful professor. His Hitchcock class was the best class I've ever taken at McGill. He is just a fantastic human being. Very smart, helpful, makes a real effort to connect with each student. Course outline was the most sensible I've ever taken part in. Few readings but still a good amount of work. Was always motivated to do a good job

Took 3 classes with him...fascinating man, hard marker. Expects major break-throughs on most of your work, which is a little ridiculous. Overall really interesting but really hard.

Schantz is a master of making the trivial seem important- but then again, that's cultural studies in a nutshell. If you're into CS, you'll love him. If you aren't, it'll be a nightmare.
