Comment:
Professor Phillips is very straightforward and overall a solid choice for elementary chemistry. He understands this is a libs requirement and does not feel the need to shove chemistry down our throats. His worksheets are fairly easy and he is an easy grader. There are four midterms that are tough but as long as you do the classwork that's fine!

Took the class in the summer and it was incredibly easy. Watch the lectures and do the homework while you watch and take notes. He posts the hw answers the day after they're due which makes it easy to check your work. Tests are based off of homework. It couldn't have been any easier in my opinion, especially for a science course.

Because of this class, nearly ended up changing my major. Tests were not like homework. Hard to get an A but will pity pass many students. Hard class with math-driven lectures. Take lots of notes! Not a bad teacher and he does care for students, but does give hard tests. Would recommend a tutor/going to office hours.

At first I didn't like this professor because his test were crazy hard and he seemed strict... But at the end and deep down, he really cares for us students because he will pity pass you if you do all your work and has a good curve in the class.

It will work out better for you if you make outlines of the material before the lecture and don't rely solely on his class to understand the material. Covers material quickly but that is to be expected. 55% is a C in his class. As long as you can hit that target you will get through it. Discussion + HW is worth 20%.

Dr. Phillips is awful. Honestly the average of all exams were always in the 40-50s range. He doesn't really create his own lecture but project things directly from the book onto the overhead. He doesn't work out the math problems to follow along but they are typed out onto the paper. Just do all homework and show up and he'll pity pass you with a C

A good professor to take for general chemistry II. He links the concepts from general chemistry I with the new topics which is helpful in preparing for the ACS exam.

I didn't like Dr. Phillip's lectures, it was all printed pages from the book and he speeds through concepts. He expects you to refresh your knowledge on Chem 1. He's nice but I relied on additional tutoring to barely pass the class. He's available for office hours for extra help but would not recommend.

Chem 2 isn't that hard if you understood chem 1 pretty well. Like all chem, chem 2 is alot of math, but Phillips expects you to know math like a pro. In class he does really easy examples but on the test he gives really hard problems and also there are always 2 or 3 problems on the test that he never talked about in class.

Cool guy definitley helps you if you come in for the extra help! Make sure to do all the book problems and worksheets they are study guides and sometimes they end up on the test. He takes questions from the book regularly. You need to be able to understand and use the formulas efficiently and quickly time is the biggest issue in the course.

I think he passed us out of pitty cus no 1 did better than 50s on all his exams I tanked all the exams including ACS& passed with a C

This is an extremely difficult class on its own but Dr. Phillips does his best to make it easy and interesting. His lectures are pretty easy to follow and he doesn't take attendance but showing up is highly recommended. This class requires a lot of outside studying but he is always around to make sure you understand and he is understanding.

His lectures are good and easy to follow, but sometimes not so interesting that can be due to the material. His exams are fair, only one of them was extremely hard, although I got 93%, I barely could finish with all the questions and calculations. Without reading the book and practicing problems it would not have happened.

I couldn't have asked for a better professor. He is so patient, kind and approachable. He is fair and explains things very clearly. I wasn't looking forward to this class but he made it a lot of fun. All my friends in this class even said they enjoyed it and thought he was a great prof. We're lucky to have him at CSUS.

This class is hard, but he knows this and really tries to ease the pressure off of students when teaching. He explains everything very thoroughly and makes sure that students understand before moving on. He really wants to help and see students succeed. Using the textbook is a must to pass the tests. All in all, definitely recommend.

The bottom line is that CHEM 1100 is just a hard class, especially if you've been away from chemistry for awhile. Phillips knows this and tries to make it as easy as possible for the students. His methods are pretty good and his pace is good. He will cut you some slack, but the tests are still hard.

Really nice professor, but he is a hard grader on the lab write ups. He is really there to help in anyway though. He wants to see his students succeed that is certain. Although he is hard, I would definately take another course with him. You do learn.
