Literally the most awesome dude ever. So awesome and really cares a lot about his students and what he's teaching. There's lots of reading and he sometimes pushes people who don't want to participate in class discussions to do so, but that didn't really bother me.

AMAZING PROFESSOR. I took him for Asian Imagination in the 21st Century, only a couple assignments over the semester, there is a couple long readings but such a light and easy amount of course work, an extremely fair and kind grader, his lectures are very interesting, and there is a lot of multi-media used too. Definitely recommend this course.

Surain is well traveled and pretty interesting. I took him for The Asian Imagination and while I wish he didn't focus on China so much at the expense of other countries, he delivered very current insights in an engaging way. Fair grader with clear expectations.

By far probably my favorite class at UNCA. I normally disliked the humanities but Dr. S was always engaging in lectures and very interesting throughout our discussions. He shows documentaries that strongly relate to the reading assignments and asks to make connections between the two. It made everything so much easier to understand. Very nice prof!

He knows a lot about it and tries to keep the class up to date and applicable. at the beginning of the semester i was excited about his class, but at some point i got tired of watching 60 minutes and hearing him talk. mostly because he loves to hear himself talk than anything else. i feel like i could have gotten a lot more out of this class.

Disappointing class from Subramaniam because usually his are very interesting. This one, though, was taught while he's publishing a book, and while the beginning of the semester was great, he sort of gave up about halfway through and just put movies on every day and counted attendance. I felt like my attendance was a waste of my time.

I've had Surain for three different classes and he is my adviser. Incredibly engaging in all his classes, beyond helpful, and would literally do anything to help you understand the material. Fun and interesting, I promise you won't fall asleep in any of his classes. Take him, it's worth it.

Extremely engaging professor who is dedicated to all of his students. He is involved in an absurd amount of activities on campus, so it's rare to see him in the office. However, he will make time for you if you notify him in advance. Believes in teaching centralized on humorous class discussions.

Surain is by far one of the most knowledgeable and engaging professors at UNCA, wholly dedicated to the success of his students. Class is less structured, mostly centering around his brilliant (but sometimes wandering) pontifications interspersed with student discussion. Also, I never left class without having let out at least a chuckle. Amazing.

Prof. Subramaniam didn't believe in tests or quizzes, our grade centered around 3 papers. The 1st paper was pushed back again and again until there were only about 6 weeks left in the semester. We were forced to rush through the second two. Subramaniam liked to assign supplemental readings via email, including 12 sent out at midnight on a Sunday.
