Durham seems like a nice enough person one-on-one, but when it comes to grading our papers, she focuses too much on errors we have not learned to avoid in her class and she is not very explanatory. I entered this class thinking - hoping - I would learn how to write good French papers, but she doesn't explain how to write them.

Comment:

Durham is the most difficult professor in the department. That being said, however, she is passionate about French and francophone literature. She is difficult to understand and doesn't explain things in the best way, but she is always willing to meet with a student if there are any problems. Also, we can do corrections for papers!

Comment:

The best French professor I've had - I consider her course the most valuable I've taken at Wooster. This class is HARD, but if you put in the time and effort, you CAN get an A. She's intense but she's brilliant, and taking her class is crucial to succeeding as a French major/minor. She's also an incredible adviser.

Durham is hard, there is no doubt about that. But she knows her stuff, and if you are willing to put in the effort she is willing to help you reach your goal. If you work hard and are engaged in class, then the class can be very rewarding.

Her grading system for papers makes no sense. She puts a huge amount of the grade based on rough drafts, and then if you score perfectly on the draft and don't change it enough, she will give you a bad score on the final paper. Not a teacher I would recommend taking a class with...

If you were looking for a fun french class, this isn't it. Durham is very intense, and rathe stand-offish in an unpleasant way. She's a very good teacher, but if she doesn't like you, there's really no hope for you. She's an exceptionally hard grader, holding everyone to the same standard, regardless of abilities. Only for true french lovers.

Durham is fantastic, once you learn her style. She's very particular about what she wants, and her classes definitely take work. However, if you stay on top of your work and make sure to spend a lot of time on the assignments, passing is feasible :)

By far one of the top professors I've had at Wooster--phenomenal. Extremely knowledgeable in film, and her film class discussions are always very dynamic. Aside from readings and film viewings, she does not give a lot of work but has high expectations for what she does assign. Attendance and participation are a must.

i think all the people who dislike her simply don't engage themselves in the class. she is like any other professor-- she can tell when someone doesn't care. she is exceptional in that she's incredibly knowledgeable and picks the most interesting films and books to study. She's also one of the most put-together women i've ever known!

Durham does tend to show some favoritism- but only to those people who appear truly passionate about the subject. if you are very interested in and committed to the class, she will notice and you'll do well. however, if the class is just a req. or something and you act like you don't care too much, she can be hellish.

Hated her. Really did. Couldn't stand her class, fell asleep more than once because of it. Comments on returned papers didn't help at all to write better papers. Avoid at all costs.

I thought Durham was great. She's great at guiding class discussion in the right direction while still making it feel like discussion is student-led. It was obvious she had a great love for film which rubbed off on me.
