Very surprised by the positive reviews, because he is a very tough grader and offers minimal guidance on the essays. No idea how I got an A, don't recomend.

He's very kind and knowledgeable, but is VERY harsh with grading his papers. I only got an A because of an extra credit quiz he offered, which he doesn't usually do. Interesting lectures, but almost no guidance on the essays, which was frustrating since he graded so harshly. Was surprised his reviews were so worshipful

Comment:

Prof Hellweg is very intelligent and passionate about African religions. He truly cares about the material. However, he expects the students to treat his course like a full-time job. He assigns 20-page academic texts that MUST be read before every class, in addition to three entire books you must read for the course. Had to work hard for an A.

Comment:

Dr. Hellweg is the best professor I've ever had. He passionately cares about the material and instills an interest in the entire class. It's important to read for class, but the readings he assigns are usually really interesting. Take him if you can- it's not every semester that you have professors like him!

Clearly knows and loves his subject, but lacks teaching aptitude. Communicates ideas poorly; half a dozen students stay after class every day to ask questions, and he doesn't set aside enough time to answer them all. Left for a week during paper prep, and the sub wasn't equipped to answer questions either. Disparages other departments unfairly.

Definitely an excellent professor. A gem. No matter what your degree is, you should still take his classes. If you're a science major and need a writing credit, try one of his classes. Definitely a catch.

Dr. Hellweg is so passionate and proficient in his subject. Definitely expect to read a lot but he readings are always interesting and he goes over them in class. There were no tests, just pop quizzes, projects and two papers. Attendance was essential to passing. Any class with him will be good. If you ever need help, he emails back quickly!

I have taken Hellweg 3 separate times and each time is amazing. He loves what he teaches and has a huge passion for it. He is extremely knowledgeable and extremely helpful. He works with the students so no one is left behind. He is by far the greatest teacher i have ever had.

Dr. Hellweg is an amazing professor. Honestly, one of the most intelligent men that I have ever met. He is very passionate and hard working. He makes sure you understand the material (which isn't easy) and he takes time to talk o you about anything! He is very animated. If you want an A then READ THE MATERIAL. Great teacher. Very enthusiastic about the subject. He openly welcomes debate and questioning in the class which makes it a very interesting experience. Attendance to the lectures is definitely a must, but by attending you will almost definitely get an A.

Joseph Hellweg is a phenomenal teacher, and a genuinely great man. He has incredible amounts of enthusiasm for the course material. He went out of his way after class, even over lunch, to help me academically and with life decisions. The class material can be difficult, though he's great at making the readings understandable. Lots of readings.
