Comment:

If you can write well and listen to his directions, you will do great. There were some funky tests we took but honestly I got an 83 on 3 tests and a 91 on the three papers and he still gave me an A+ with no percentage in the gradebook. Dr. Shaffer is great as long as you turn in your papers, show up, and listen. I would 1000% recommend him!

He's a great teacher and so flexible! He understands the stress students have and he truly cares about everyone of his students. He does what he can to make the class really easy for you. He changed the format due to moving online and removed tests but he engages in discussions. 2 major papers and 2 major speeches complete and get an A!

Dr. Schaefer is an awesome teacher. It is very clear what he expects from you and there are no surprises. He grades very reasonably and runs a good class. He also tells many, many stories throughout the semester.

He was great for beginning speech class. Highly recommend. Took him for a summer class. So it was only 4 weeks long and a semester worth of information. He gave us skip days to prepare for our speech. He is kind and fun and dorky. Put effort into it and work hard. If you do that you will pass. He's also understanding of health problems and such. Just email him if you won't be in class. It's that easy.

I was terrified of this course but it was my favorite course of the semester! Schaefer is amazing, and can honestly teach anyone how to succeed at public speaking. He was really encouraging and he even helped me get a paid writing position on campus after finding out I wanted to go into journalism.

Prof. Schaefer is one of the best teachers I've ever had. Any introvert who shakes in their shoes at having to take a speech class should take his class. You will be SO glad you did! The whole class got _so_much_ out of the class because he is fantastic. You have to actually do the work (duh.) Big thumbs up for Professor Schaefer!

This was a really good speech class! He knows what he's doing, with 20+ years of experience in the Communication field. He is a pretty easy grader and willing to help students. Tests are open book. The only thing is, he can be quite conservative so don't choose a topic that goes against his beliefs because it will show on your speech grade.

I found Professor Schaefer to be a fun teacher with an amusingly dry sense of humor. He's very flexible, and definitely offers assistance if needed. I don't particularly like writing or giving speeches, but I still greatly enjoyed his class. Also- VERY easy A.

This professor made Advance Public Speaking an absolute BREEZE!!! I might even become a communications major just so I can have an EXCELLENT professor!!:) He is VERY brilliant in the field of communication!!! I was praying for a C and ended up with an A!! i didnt take him for speech, heard he was better there than in my class. in this one, HORRIBLE TEACHER. vague assignments & deadlines, doesnt know the subject at all. not helpful, i constantly argue with thim to no avail. unfairly subjective grading, stubborn ignorance. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.

I can see why ppl have problems w/ this class. Giving speeches is no fun and Schaefer has a rather dry sense of humor. The text is easy to read and reinforced heavily in lectures. Sometimes deadlines and requirements were a little unclear, it is up to you to ask. Fairly simple class all in all once you get over speaking in front of the class.

Contrary to some of the unfair comments: This professor is TOPNOTCH: he is fair, sensitve to student needs, very detailed in his teaching methodologies. I rate him an AAAAAAAAAA. Thanks for changinging my life and helping me to become a better public speaker!

Prof. Schaefer was one of the best teachers I've had at UMKC. He in no way showed ANY political affilliation while teaching my class and I can't see how anyone could even read that from him, as he was equall with both candidates. I will take him again for advanced speech.

i am currently in his class. he has already shown dis-like towards me speaking out against president bush. obviously that is not fair. he isn't clear on what our assignments are give examples.
