I would not recommend him. I've got an A, but studied REALLY hard, mostly independently. If possible, take another professor. He's unclear in his lectures, although shows that he loves the subject and is willing to explain if you come up to him. The exams are short answer and fill-in and are difficult. The lab was not hard.

Worst...class...ever. The tests were extremely difficult and when I tried to go to his office hours to ask for help the only thing he told me was to go over my notes. The difficulty of the subject was expected, but his teaching did not help.

Wonderful professor, but had difficult tests. He is extremely excited about the topic, but can go off on tangents occasionally. Study his handouts and lecture notes and you can do well on his tests.

Prof. Metcalf overall is a good professor, and like others have said, he does know the material and has a passion for the subject. This class is HARD, don't fool yourself otherwise. If I had the opportunity to take him again I probably wouldn't just because he is a dull lecturer and his exams are hard (fill-in the blank, short answer q's, tables)

the whole class claped on the last day of lecture, not because the class was over but because of the appreciation for microbes we had gained. I learned a lot from the class and did well. It was my favorite class of the 18 units I took that semester. It's hard to have a favorite class with a load like that, so that's saying a lot. :)

A very hard class! You have to study your ass off and then maybe you can pass. Get tests from past semesters, they are very helpful. He lectures are very interesting and he is a very helpful professor.

it is rare that you find a professor who truly loves what he is teaching, but this prof does, and it comes out during the lecture. if you are planning to take micro, this professor is a good choice.
