very caring: she constantly checks in, adjusts her expectations/syllabus after taking the class mood into account. Facilitated discussions really well. I like theory, so I really enjoyed her class, but if you are not a theory/paper person, you won't. Her paper expectations are vague, so it seems like she grades hard, but if you reach out, she helps

Stein is one of the most caring professors I've had. She checks in, is approachable, and understands the amount of stress that students face. Her class is heavily theory-based and her teaching style is discussion-based. She bases the syllabus on the class dynamic (super flexible). That being said, her grading is very harsh, particularly on papers.

Professor Stein is one of my favorite professors that I have had thus far at Duke. She is very knowledgeable in her field and genuinely cares about her students. This class looked at comparative perspectives on Israel and Palestine. She co-taught with Professor Erika Weinthal.

One of the most intense professors ever. She also doesn't know how to explain difficult concepts that she chooses to teach in her course. By far the worst class I have ever taken at Duke.

Prof. Stein is awesome! She's really great at facilitating class and discussion and has interesting ideas and constructs the syllabus well. She really cares that students learn but is a tough grader and wants to push you. This class on Cultures of New Media really changed my worldview in its own way. Highly recommend taking her!

It was a small class, and she does demand a lot from you, but she is a really smart and very nice person. IT seems hard at first and participation matters, but if you work for it, she recognizes it and gives you the grade. Definitely one of the best classes I've taken at Duke, and learned the most. Very helpful

Hard material, but all you need to know is discussed in class. Tests are easy, study in groups with your class notes. Papers are pretty vague and she grades them hard, but you can still come out on top with good test grades. Both final exam and final paper.

LOTS OF READING! A decent lecturer but can be hard to follow. Tests are fair and not too hard, but the papers topics are vague and your grade depends completely on TA.

Never take a class with her unless you are serious about the course material. Took Theoretical Foundations (which you should never take unless you are a CulAnth major) and it was horrific. Everything was purposefully graduate student level readings (she told us outright), and so theoretical as to be useless in practice. She's grades tough, beware.

There is a lot of reading, all of which you will need to know for the test so it is important to stay on top of the readings. However most of the readings are interesting and the paper topics were cool and you could basically pick what you wanted to write about. She is not mean. I would recommend this class a lot! It made me want to major in it!!

This class had bi-weekly readings, averaging about 25 pages each. the readings were generally interesting and would be discussed in class. lectures were interesting and necessary. discussions are mandatory but pretty pointless. she is very clear about what is going to be on the test. if you do the readings and come to class, youll get a good grade

Highly recommend this class. She's not mean at all. She is clear, very reasonable, down-to-earth, and interesting. Reading can be extensive but very interesting. Take this class if you are interested in conceptual thinking, cultural identities, people, and the world. An A is very attainable if you do the reading.

The subject matter of our Focus class was fascinating - the Arab-Israeli conflict - and it was cool to approach it from the perspective of the counter-narrative. Stein's background in journalism and her time spent in Israel also make this interesting, but she is not the best professor as far as generating good discussion and making class interestin

She is mean, 'nuff said. I don't go to class to be dumped on by the prof., and that's what she routinely did. She's got some race issues, I'd say. And a bit paranoid - always thinks everyone's trying to cheat her.

She's interesting but has the odd habit of making suddenly accusing random students of harboring dark motives. She's also needlessly and randomly sarcastic to people in class...she needs to chill...

Class required a lot of reading but it was all fairly interesting. She adopted a seminar/discussion approach by student request which was always interesting. I highly recommend.(class= Palestine, Israel, and the Arab-Israeli Conflict)
