Comment:
Dr. Johnston is really great. His feedback on exams is very thorough - of which the exams are extremely fair. Go to his lectures, if you listen and write everything down you will be able to succeed. He does expect thinking outside of the box on essays; if this is a bizarre or foreign concept to you then welcome to university.

I really like Dr. Johnston. The way he formats his exams & essays are GREAT. Very clear and helpful. He's very intelligent and funny. Lectures can get dull so I recommend recording them, as the info on his slides are minimal at best. Great prof, though.

I would have to disagree with all the negative comments. He is not rude nor is he condescending. He is however, very intimidating. But he is a very nice and funny guy and he is willing to help you if you need it. He does take a more scientific approach, which I personally liked. Take his class if you want a challenge (especially POLI 385)

Comment:
He's a sweet and knowledgeable man. However, his lectures would get lost on too many graphs and charts, which I found excessive and boring. Extremely dense and boring readings (I stopped reading them eventually)! I felt that you needed some original thinking to get anything higher than a B. Nice guy, but wish I took another course instead.

I enjoyed Dr. Johnston's 385 class and found him to be funny and extremely knowledgeable. Sometimes he lost people during lectures but was always willing to answer questions and discuss ideas given by his students. His marking was fair and the assignments weren't unreasonable, he also posted all his slides online in case you missed something.

He thinks he is a real scientist adding to a body of knowledge. In other words he thinks learning about human politics is like doing physics or chemistry you just have to stick to the scientific method(which is ridiculous). Being the dpt. Head he may be the reason all poli sci studs have to do poli 380; because Q.M is emphasized in U.S. programs.

I echo the comments below precisely:"I loved poli sci before I had him as a prof. He destroyed my passion for the topic by being rude, condascending and sometimes, just plain mean." In fact, I have now changed Faculties to escape - though this has totally given direction to my life. Thanks DICK!

I dont know what all the fuss about Dr. J being a hardass **** was about. He was quite friendly and completely fair in his marking. He certainly pushed us hard, but every single person in our class rose to the challenge. I learned a lot about what I'm capable of thanks to this class and Dr. J.

Easier than the other comments suggest, as long as you comply with his style. Is smart and helpful if you want it. Is a positivist who only cares about causal analysis. Normative issues are ignored. He is every reason I hate social science. Offers Foucault at the end. Why? So he can laugh at him?

Dr J has an old school approach to academia, destroy the ego and rebuild it in his own image. Those who complied did well, those who didn't were ... well ... destroyed

Brilliant man. Perhaps too bright to be teaching at the undergrad level. If you have the chance to take a class from him accept the challenge and welcome the rewards.
