Fair marker with clear expectations. You'll do fine if you do the readings, participate in class, and take good notes. Her lectures were always interesting and it was very enjoyable talking with her during office hours. I would definitely take a course with her again.

Dr. Hulan seems like a nice enough person, but at the end of the day that's not what I paid for when I signed up to take this course. Her classes are supremely dull, often comprising long-winded tangents and a lot of opinionated statements. I found myself doubting my decision to be an English major in the first place while in her class.

This is the second time I've had Professor Hulan and she didn't fail to disappoint! She tries her best to make dry material enjoyable and she's just a sweet lady in general. HIGHLY recommend.

Easily one of my favourite profs I've had so far at UW. Although the material can be dry sometimes, Professor Hulan is always enthusiastic about it and does her best to make it interesting. Fun and welcoming class. Great and helpful prof!

A model example of a professor. She is very intelligent, never arrogant, clear and positively upbeat. Perfect amount of coursework to engage students. I have just finished my degree and can honestly say that Shelley is one of the best English professors at UW.

Shelley hulan is one of my favorite teachers at waterloo. She is definitly an amazing prof. She does very well with teaching tough material that is dry in itself and is able to captivate the class w/ the passion she has for her work and she definitly sparks passions among students with the level of class participation that can b found w/in her clas

She might be great in person, but her D.E. lectures are incredibly boring. She is way too long-winded and it takes her forever to get to the point. The marker seems nice enough, but the prof/lectures makes the course complete torture. I wouldn't take a course with this prof again.

Took a course with Hulan for the second time; it was more enjoyable than the first. Very straightforward and easy lecture style, tests are simple - you realistically don't even have to do the reading for this one so long as you attend class regularly. Very nice, answers questions, uses lots of discussion. Highly recommended.

Great teacher. Fair couse load, fair marker, easy to understand lectures. She made a seemingly boring and unfamiliar (to me) subject matter interesting. I looked forward to her classes. Her comments on essays and mid-terms were very helpfu. Will definately take more of her classes.

The material is definitely a little dry, and while she doesn't really do much to spice it up, this is not exactly her fault. She's nice, and a fairly easy marker - if you did well in high school english, you'll be able to do quite well in this course as well.
