Comment:

Dr. Deen's use of language is more beneficial and uplifting than it is unbearable. People who do not participate or put effort into the work will find their tasks more daunting than they need to be. Assignments are clear, feedback is excellent and the readings are diverse. The prose is typically lengthy, but she walks through each piece in class.

Horrible class from start to finish. Her use of language was unbearable. Her guidelines were too strict. If you didnt write what she thought then you werent getting credit. Was absolutely boring and didnt know how to teach. Hands down worst professor Ive ever had. Do not take if you dont have to.

Prepare to work for a grade in this class. Lots of reading, as well as an expectation to properly analyze the reading. Stella is helpful in analyzing the reading but can do it in a stern way at times. Be prepared to waste up your printing money, because she will make you print out everything. If you're sick ... you might be out of luck.

I loved Dr Deen's Women in Lit class! Excellent choice of materials for a 200 level class. I really learned a lot, and Dr Deen was very helpful during office hours.

Seems to be knowledgeable in her field but very poor at teaching. I have never had a professor be so unclear and then ridicule you if you ask a question because you don't seem to understand. I had all grades B+ or above except for hers this semester. Very unprofessional!

I agree - you will receive your money's worth. Outstanding in her field - Knowledgeable, brings lit. to life. Big words? Of course - she's an English teacher! Many of us could stand some improvement in spoken and written forms!

Contrary to earlier reviews, Dr. Deen is an outstanding instructor. Proseminar isn't the most exciting class, but she chooses fun (and important) works and gives an outstanding amount of feedback on written work. She's not an easy grader, and considers everything you say and write very carefully. But that's what you're paying for, right?

Ms. Deen is extremely knowledgeable. However, I think most students were intimidated by her rich language use and lack of connection to young folks. Her tone can be piercing. While I did receive help from her, the lack of common language use on her part made it very frustrating for me.

The inimitable legend, Professor Deen is easily the *fiercest* instructor in the department :) Although she was condescending to the lacksidasical, indilligent types, she was more than justified - this is a lower-division course, not rocket science! Tests were always in essay form, a nice respite from the old-school regurgitation types.

She is a tough grader. Uses alot of big words when she talks... sometimes har to understand. She makes herself very available as far as office hours but does not offer much help. It may be because this class is giving me problems, but I do not like her either.

She is condescending and rude and criticises students when they voice their opinions yet if you dont voice your opinion she picks on you.she has favourites and grades your work according to how much you've pleased her that day in class.she never gives any positive criticism only negative comments on your work.DONT TAKE HER CLASSES!

She definitely has favorites. If you're not one of them, she's very rude and short tempered. The favorites seem to rule the class. The study guides didn't seem to cover any material on tests. Good discussion and in-class analysis of literature (student led) but overall I wouldn't reccomment her if you're looking for an interesting or fun teacher.

Unless you absolutely have to take her class, DON'T! She is demeaning, and a very ineffective teacher. I was extremely disappointed in her attitude and demeanor in a one-on-one situation. When I went for help, she basically told me "too bad. There's nothing I can do." So I don't know where people think she is 1. approachable and 2. helpful.

Contrary to what some people have said, she is a nice person and easy to relate to. The class texts are a mixed bag, some interesting, some boring, but nothing unbearable. My one complaint is that the questions she asks in class are sometimes unclear and I can't always tell exactly what she means to ask. Other than that, it's a decent class.

She is an okay person, but she is a terrible communicator.She takes things way too personal. She does not know how to relate to students. I agree that you should take her classes on an "as needed" basis. Do not volunteer for her class. Avoid if at all possible.

Stella takes every chance you give her to help you in her class. She is extremely thorough with her comments too. She runs a tough class, but it will help you improve tremendously.
